What did you do in the garden today?

Sun won't be out until later, so house and garden tasks this morning. Bank run, that kind of thing. I'm going to try one more thing with the odd light fixture, as town has the hardware store as well, so I can get bits I could use.
Tomatoes in the green house are monsters. I might have to have a presale, or by NEXT Friday, I'll be chasing a boy named jack out of there.
Everything has been watered and fed, waiting for the sun.

The cattle pasture that I am reclaiming around my house was full of saplings; mostly red cedar, and honey locust. I hired someone to come out and cut them down as close to the ground as he was able so that I can mow across the top of them.

Now I am worried. 😂 😭

I have had good luck with either digging out small saplings with a shovel or using a pruning blade on a reciprocating saw and digging down into the dirt to cut it out. I also have used a farm jack with a chain to pull out some larger trunks, but that takes me longer and I'm not very skilled with using it.

I do have one small Snapper riding mower that I use for rough (non-lawn) mowing. It has an old blade in it and I only use it for brush cutting - so to speak - and never for cutting the lawn. But it can clear out an area and lets me see what I need to do before I can use my other mowers with new blades for cutting the lawn. Once I clear an area, then I hit any sprouts with the reciprocating saw or a shovel and get it out by the roots.

Not much happening here today, but it's nice out. Made some repairs to the netting in the chicken run - those stupid squirrels keep chewing holes in it.

We had a load of stone delivered - guy told DH to leave the rest of the money under the cone. Guy moved the cone but never looked & dumped the stone on top of the cash. :he I wasn't sure if DH left the money or not so when he came knocking at the door I gave him the $100, not knowing he buried it. DH is so mad. We now have a $700 load of stone, as if $600 wasn't enough!

:lau Sounds like you have a treasure dig to explore with a $100 payoff guaranteed!

It's a nice, cool morning here so far, 58° F at 9AM. I need to go out and pick a bunch of my red Russian kale while is still nice and crispy. Might even pluck the top from one of my broccoli plants.

I had an unwelcome visitor last night. A deer decided to sample the leaves of my horseradish plant. I guess it's time I set up my electric fence to keep those suckers out.

I bought all the electric fence supplies in February, but have never set one up. I have plenty of 6' t-posts, insulators and a t-post driver, so it shouldn't be too difficult to wrap the entire garden area in a "shocking" barrier. LOL

I read that to teach critters how the fence works, wrap pieces of aluminum foil onto the hot wire in a few places and smear them with peanut butter.

I have a 2nd year parsley plant growing, and I swear it doubled in height overnight during the cool, rainy weather. I need to pick some of that, too. I planted several new parsley plants nearby, so I'll have plenty of that herb for the next couple years.

The cucumbers, squash and bean seeds I planted several days ago still haven't broken ground, but the radish seeds are sprouting.

So tell me something... Is this a Brussels sprouts plant? I never grew it before and I don't know if they show a little cluster at the top like this one is. I lost track of where I planted what in brassica patch. LOL

I can relate.... My DH was trying to help and cut down my blue/purple Rose of Sharon tree. He can't remember if he just cut it down or ripped it out, roots & all. I've been looking for anything to grow back but nothing yet.

On a similar note, he caught the pasture on fire a few years ago and it passed through my garden. Burned down my Concords to the ground. Glad to say that they grew back... I moved them to a safer location and they are going great. I'm sure yours will come back stronger than ever!
