What did you do in the garden today?

An hour of work on the shed this morning. Heading back inside to work in the office. Floor is almost complete though on the shed. I just need to cut the 5th sheet of plywood into 2ft sections for along the back. DS helped me with the string line. He's 6 and loves finding ways to help. That's his blue toolbox in the tire. :)

I have a pair of solid crocs (with no holes) and an off-brand pair that I wear for gardening. They are easy slip-on/off. I use the solid ones because I don't like wet feet and grass makes me break out in a rash. I wear ankle length muck boots if it's really wet/muddy. They are also very easy to slip on or off.

I was collecting eggs this morning and saw one of my blue Marans sitting on a nest that my Pekin had started. I picked her up to check for new eggs. She had an egg under her wing which fell on the developing eggs below. Cracked one of my duck eggs. :he. I brought it in the house. Going to try to cover it with some beeswax and put it in the incubator.

The second batch of scapes have been processed.

They look so fun on the garlic plant.

two jars pickled in ACV base. This is different than the last batch, which were pickled in white wine vinegar with a bigger variety of spices.

Also, put some in a Ball fermenting jar - its a quart jar, with a fermenting lid, and a stainless spiral insert to hold down the veg. Cooled (warm) brine was poured over, and now I wait.

The scapes used up the last of my Dill seed. So, today I was at a BIG grocery store in a larger city. Not.a.single.jar of dill seed to be found....there wasn't even a space for Dill seed, as I read all the shelf labels. There were around 6-8 choices for Dill weed, but no seed. So, in the town closer to me, I stopped at grocery. Nope, no dill seed, not even a space for it. So, I stopped at Wal-Mart. They had only 4 "Great Value" brand jars of dill seed, so two were purchased. Of all the things I would expect to have to hunt for, dill seed was not one of those things!

Good thing about my trip to Wal-Mart, they still had flower bulbs, so I bought all the Papaver (poppy) ones, hoping they are alive as they are in opaque bags, then a few Dahlias, which look alive. They were all 50-60% off.

We got just barely under 1" of rain yesterday- this morning. That is great! everything is well watered in. But, such cool weather for mid-June. And a low in the 40's tonight!

I put up a quick chicken fence around 2 sides of my garden area. It's just heavy plastic mesh fencing, 2 feet high. I hope it's enough to stop them. There's electric fence wires above it so that might help. I started out making a wooden fence last week but I don't have the energy to keep working on that, so plastic fencing will have to do for now.
