What did you do in the garden today?

I like the concept. I don't have room here but do have lots of room on the farm. I'd rather get the wildflower species individually, though. Much less risk invasive species; some of the mixes are scary, that way, when you get lists of what is in them.
I never considered the "invasive" aspect of planting wildflower mixes. Good point!

Ordered chicks! Will pick up end of Feb.

8 high production - they are a mixed breed called Golden Buff Cross. They are pretty mild mannered, and have good production.

6 EE for the color and variety.

We have another chick order from last year that had to carry over to 2024, so those chicks are set to arrive around April/May depending on egg production/hatch rates.

Went through some seed catalogs - will start to place some orders soon!

Tonight we get some snow. Looks like it will hit around 11pm or so, but morning drive may be a bit messy or difficult.

Goats are shacked up in the workshop at night still. Looks like Monday night will be their first back in their pen all night. The workshop is insulated. We fire up the wood stove in the morning, when they are back in their outdoor pen. Then the workshop is only cool when they get back in there at night, and gets colder through the night. Trying not to get them too used to a less cold environment but it has been simply too cold for them to stay in the pen overnight. Those single digit and low teen temps are getting tiresome.

Weather is dropping back to single digits again tonight after getting up to 40 degrees today. I had to shut off the tank De-icer in the goats water bucket because it was melting the bucket. I was worried it would destroy the bucket and/or come in contact with the surrounding straw and start a fire. So it's likely their water will be frozen in the morning.

We've been looking high & low for 5 gallon heated bucket, as a replacement. Everywhere is sold out. I ended up ordering one from Amazon and paying an extra $15 for expedited shipping which still won't get it here until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest. To add insult to injury, Amazon offered that same delivery timeline FOR FREE (Prime) when I looked at the bucket last night. I didn't order it then because I was hoping it to find one locally at the bigger town nearby since I had an appointment there today. No bones. 😡

When I had horses and the creek froze I would bring out water a couple times a day and bring when they finished drinking. I do this with the chickens too. I don't leave out waterers or buckets

We made it to 18 today, a squall went through and visibility dropped to 10 FEET.
I missed two turns getting home, we were crawling at a snail's pace.
Took me an hour to do a 20 mile drive.
PHEW.
heading for -10'F tonight with chills to -35'F
and Friday night we drop again and will wake up Saturday morning to -22'F and chills near -45'F
I am OVER THIS.

This morning around 7:30 am, I was feeding animals and heard my dogs losing their minds. I came out of the chicken coop and peered around the corner. There was a police car in my driveway. I immediately headed up to the house to figure out what was going on. The officer saw me and walked over... He said there was a white chicken running around on the highway. While it hadn't been run over yet, it had flown into a moving vehicle. He was trying to find the owner to come get it. I told him I would check my flock but I didn't think it was ours. We have 5 white chickens (3 Leghorns, 2 Rhode Island Whites) and all were accounted for...

Poor bird.

I thought global warming was here, so I made the mistake of ordering a container for stuff like leaves and fallen branches in January , also got in trouble with the municipal law, cos I didn’t apply for a permit for letting a container sit on the side of a dirt road, which only gets used by the homeowner no through traffic. As I found out, they drive through the streets twice (!) a week to check for offenses like mine 😮, wow, they must be busy, when I want something from them, it can take up to 3 months…thank God got that straightened out ( of course had to pay a fee) . Now everything is frozen solid, and I can’t get that container filled. It will be picked up on the 23. I really hope we have a day (or 2) with no frost 🙃
