What did you do in the garden today?

We made it to 18 today, a squall went through and visibility dropped to 10 FEET.
I missed two turns getting home, we were crawling at a snail's pace.
Took me an hour to do a 20 mile drive.
PHEW.
heading for -10'F tonight with chills to -35'F
and Friday night we drop again and will wake up Saturday morning to -22'F and chills near -45'F
I am OVER THIS.
I wonder how it's comparing to the long winter of 1880-1881?

Just placed first seed order for 2024. I’m not used to seeing out of stocks - I usually order late Dec. but, some people snagged some good things before I ordered. Oh well - I have plenty of seeds anyway.

My order was for Baker Creek, all flowers, but I noticed they had the fiddle head cabbage (large up to 10 lb size) so I had to order 1 packet. My order comes with 2 free samples, wonder what I’ll get!
I got hot pepper seeds. Not sure who to give them to.

No seeds at my local TSC. Lots of seeds at Job Lots. Although not a whole lot of onion seeds. I got a packet of leeks and a packet of yellow onion seeds. I did buy early peas so I have them on hand to put in the ground as soon as I can. Also some Brussel sprout seeds. I’m hoping to get them to grow under bug netting. We never got any snow today. That’s fine with me. I’m prepped for the single digits tomorrow. The pellet stove is cleaned and plenty of food and bedding for the chickens. I’m tired of winter already.

record was set in 1888 and that's a temp of -28'F (actual temp)
You have actually asked the right person the question about LIW Long winter. We had our LONG winter comparison Two AND Three years ago. Arctic weather started in Mid October and the snows and brutal chill just kept coming from Canada about every 10 days. We ran out of places to shove and pile snow. I cannot even imagine being stuck in the primative prairielands then with no snow removal equipment. You'd be stuck, but good, and you'd have no idea when the next round was coming or how long it was going to last. You'd run out of buffalo chips, wood, food. Stock would die. Getting lost in the snow was a real thing. It can actually get so cold here that fires will NOT burn. There's a reason the Natives left and followed the bison every year. This place is inhospitable.

Guess I shouldn't laugh too much. The engine on my Dodge Ram crapped out at 150k miles. I had it replaced. The engine that is, because it was cheaper than a new rig.

I'd gladly go out and get a new truck. But ATM, they aren't making anything I WANT.
