What did you do in the garden today?

That's funny. I'm growing some for the first time this year because I got free seeds & I can squeeze them in between plants. DH likes them so I can put them on his salads too & I'm sure the chickens will be happy if they get them.

I might like them pickled. I like everything pickled.
Hmm. Pickled might be good. Guess I should expand my horizons

Squill in bloom and overwintered Shogoin turnips forming flower buds. I pick the first buds to cook. These self sow. Greens on overwintered plants too tough eat. No turnip greens.

I really like your raised beds. I'd like to try a few here. What type of wood do you use? A friend of mine used old pallet wood but rats gnawed it & kinda made it all collapse. I've got the fire ants that tunnel here, spinosad bait manages the numbers, and I've set up the Jiffy corn mix & baking soda baits to address rodents, but both of those little jerks are always going to be around. We have a lot of rabbits, groundhogs & deer here. Do you cover them with deer netting?
They're cedar wood, and are available here:

I have purchased them over the last three years, splurging when they're on sale. They're not cheap, but so far I am pleased with both the quality of the product and the customer service. They're an investment.

I haven't had rats but I do have fire ants. They try to take over a bed and I just keep harassing them with my trowel until they appear to move.

It depends on the person. Not everyone has issues with nightshades or any particular family of plants. Elimination diets help the individual figure out their own triggers because they are not the same for everyone.

Also, I haven’t found any evidence that sweet potatoes are anti inflammatory. Good for you? Absolutely. I would like a source on the anti inflammatory part if you have one.
Nothing handy, no. Much of what I have learned and shared has been over the last 20-30 years, from books and articles.

Cool, thank you. I saved some cedar plank siding from work awhile back. It's been in one of my wood storage sheds since then. I think I will see how thick it is, but it is probably too thin. I was going to do a herringbone design on a wall inside my house with it. I will use it somewhere for sure, it smells wonderful. We have a mom & pop specialty wood supply shop nearby, too, I bet they'll have some. I love going there anyway. Wish I could get a job working there.

It’s been raining all day. We still have slush on the grass and some of the pavement. It will freeze tonight and the rest will go away tomorrow. I haven’t in the past been able to find daikon radish seeds. As an alternative I do grow the white icicle radishes. They are milder and somewhat similar to Daikon. I’ve never even thought about cooking them but will certainly add that to my list of things to try. Today the place I purchase my stove pellets from announced their “early buy” sale. With the way prices have skyrocketed on everything lately I was pleasantly surprised to order 3 tons of pellets delivered inside my garage for $1205. The cost of the stove cleaning only went up $15. On the savings note, I’m focusing on saving seeds this year. I feel like I’m spending way too much on seeds every year and especially this year.
