What did you do in the garden today?

I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. You’re creative and provide a lot of great info!

:lau Recently I was responding to a question on another thread. It was about using paper shreds as coop bedding. I gave my answer, as best I could, and then decided to ask Microsoft Copilot AI about the issue. It came back with lots of information that I agreed with in the response. So, I figured I must be on the right track. When I checked the references for that AI response, it listed the thread I started here on the BYC forums as the first reference! No wonder I agreed with the content! It was just restating many points I had already posted here and comments from other members who responded to that thread.

🤔 I'm not quite sure how I feel about Microsoft Copilot AI using the thread I started here on the BYC forum as the first reference in its response. Maybe we all need to consider how valuable our input and experiences we post here might be used by others. Evidently, the AI engines are reading our posts and giving them weight.

:caf Of course, I have used other search engines and also got references back to the BYC forums, but that was the first time I got a response that referenced a thread that I started.

:old But let me link you to that thread, Using Shredded Paper for Coop Litter - As Good As Wood Chips? because one of the best advantages to using paper shreds in the coop as bedding is that the paper shreds compost much faster than other methods of bedding I have used. All that paper shreds compost eventually makes it way to my food gardens. If that sounds interesting to anyone, check it out if you get a chance.

Okay... Here's some better pictures of the mystery vine.

This is the closest thing to a "flower" on this thing. It has these little leaf clusters every 4-6" or so.

This is how the vine looks when it emerges from the undergrowth and has full sunlight.

This is the vine wrapping itself rather tightly around the fence. It is pretty common to see multiple vines or shoots wrapped tightly together on anything it can use (the fence in this case) to climb vertically

After much digging and yanking, I managed to pry up ONE spot where it was rooted in the ground. I cannot overstate how dang near IMPOSSIBLE it is to pull this out by hand.

UGH. WINTERCREEPER. What a PIA plant.

Maybe those "pot heads" have the time and energy to treat every seedling as precious as a first-born infant, but I tend to start and pot my garden seedlings in bulk, putting 2 or 3 seeds in each starting pot (net cup), and pruning back to the one healthiest plant.
With those seeds costing upwards of $15 each, yeah, they're going to treat them with extreme care.

Cleaned out the winter barn today and hauled hay and spread manure on the hayfield.
I'm planning on moving the rest of the winter hay to the pasture today as mulch and I really need to get the horseradish in the ground today too.
I put the winter windows for the coop away, but not far, as I MIGHT need them next week. So they're off the run, but not washed and away, away.

:old  Guess I'm showing my age and lack of knowledge in that area. I'm thinking a pack of garden seeds costs less than $2.00. If I had to pay $15.00 per cannabis seed, I guess I would be putting a lot of time and effort into each seed.

Thanks for the knowledge boost. I had no idea...

🤔 BTW, when I referenced "pot heads" in a previous post, it was not to denigrate them as much as to separate them out from "gardeners" who grow food. I should probably use a more friendly term. I looked it up and it was suggested I use "cannabis enthusiasts" as a more respectful term for people who grow and use cannabis. I will try to be better. No offense meant, but words have weight, so I went back and edited my previous statement.

I had to look it up online since I never bought them before. But I did harvest wild weed when I was a dumb kid. LOL

And no offense taken, no worries. :thumbsup

Holy smokes, it's hot out there... 🥵 I planted more seed potatoes, treated for fire ants in several beds, planted some romaine, and weeded the garlic beds. Now I'm pooped and drenched in sweat.

Picked up some 30% horticulture vinegar to kill that pesky vine. I saw some organic weed killer but they wanted $30-$40, depending on brand, for not very much... The vinegar was half the cost for a full gallon.

Went to the feed store today. Saw chicks were already sold out. The breeds I want are/were supposed to come in on 4/2 but apparently the hatchery has already said there will be no Black Copper Marans which is mostly what I wanted so I'm not even going to bother fighting the crowd. I'll just hatch my own eggs.

I think I'm going to hatch chicks for sale too... Both the feed store and TSC said they had a LINE of people waiting to buy chicks before they even opened. Then the first 2 people bought ALL of them. The lady at the feed store said it almost caused a fist fight with other people who wanted to buy some too.... Like crazy. They are also charging $7-$9 PER CHICK (minimum purchase of 6).😱 I'll charge $4/chick for straight run. That's insane...
