What did you do in the garden today?

The old adage of "never enough time" really hits home when I walk out to where the garden is supposed to be and just look at the amount of work I have ahead of me for this season. An hour or so a day to work on it just isn't enough.

Well today I hit Home Depot and dropped way too much $$ on lumber for the AP raised beds (treated 2x10's in 12' lengths are stupid expensive!). I got the post holes dug and posts set for our fencing around the AP ponds and started breaking down our free pallets to use as pickets. I also had a neighbor from a couple acres over stop in to visit and he, like me, is a prepper (don't judge) so we had lots to talk about. He is currently tilling in manure and top soil that he had hauled in for his 50'x100' garden. Yeah that thing is HUGE. He is also looking to bring in chickens and turkeys and I told him we'd incubate a few dozen of our eggs and give him the chicks if he wanted. He brews his own beer and makes wine so he has some items to trade for the chicks. Got to talking about fruit trees and he intends to plant several just like we do although we still need to clear some of the dying oak and walnut out of our place. Turns out he needs some work done at his place so I might be trading some labor to him for some help with tree removal. We also talked well digging and solar energy and how we both prefer the barter system to anything monetary.

I think I he and I are going to get along splendidly.

Wish I had such awesome neighbors ... mine think if any open expanse isn't seeded with lawn and mowed four times a week its worthless. Sigh.

Nothin wrong with bein a "prepper". It's the way people used to live, self sufficient, buy flour, sugar, etc... in bulk because you only went to the store, maybe, every 6 months. Grew and canned all your own food, had poultry for meat and eggs...........It's like taking a step back in time, to when things were simpler.
