Don't give up on the Crepe myrtle just yet. They are pretty hardy and I've seen them come back from roots.

Thanks, it takes longer to recover when we get older.

I'm leaving the crepe myrtles but pulling the rose bush.

It sure does take longer. Slipped and fell hard last winter, feeding chickens. Still paying for it in my elbow.
Friend of mine actually tried to remove a Crepe myrtle because it was in a walk way he was putting in. That thing has put out so many slips he now wishes he didn't cut it down.

Not much done in garden this week. Did pick 4 nice sized tomatoes but, I've been down with the bug everyone in California seems to be getting.

Thanks. I think allergies from all the smoke from the fires didn't help either.

Today I picked the pears. Cut some comfrey for the chickens. And that's about it except for normal chores. Supposed to go to neighbors to get a couple roosters but not sure it that's going to happen.

Just looked up comfrey, tells me it grows in damp, grassy places. How do you grow it in Northern California? Do you have to water it a lot, or do you happen to have a boggy spot? Or does it really not care where it grows despite what wikipedia says?

I really need to get back into the garden! My seeds i planted need watering if they are going to sprout! Today i put up 8 more pieces of cedar siding plus some small pieces on and around the nest box. Plus i sold my buddy , Pounce. I think the people will be good to him.

Wikipedia strikes again. Since I've mulched the uphill side of the 12 plants they have done fine. The bottom plants have always done well. I actually did a raised bed of sorts no side boards just made a row out of my compost. So it drains freely downhill. I water it every time I water the orchard due to it being hooked to their water supply. Maybe every 5 days. This variety is supposed to be drought tolerant. The Jerusalem artichokes are pushing through the fence on the left.

Someone ask how I was going to start the thornless blackberry. These are the slips I put in this about 2 weeks ago. They've already rooted.

Yesterday and today I've been pulling the "cut and come again" plants, trimming low hanging tree limbs, pulling out rampant vines, cutting down 10 foot tall wild sunflowers, cutting back the 4o'clocks and moon plant and pulling the large weeds like ragweed, lambs quarter and wild asters.
Everything seems to have just exploded.
I filled the back of the pickup twice yesterday with a mounded load and twice today and hauled everything to a brush pile in the back pasture where we are stopping a wash.
Will be doing this for the next several days because I run out of steam before running out of the plants to pull.

I haven't done a thing out in the garden but water. Fell and hurt myself a week ago, but feeling on the mend finally. Don't think all the crepe myrtles are going to make it, maybe half. The rose bush still doesn't look good, so probably going to pull them tomorrow.
Today we are putting together a temporary coop in the chicken yard for the new littles. Holding off any hard work until later in the week to give myself a little more time to heal.

It's gorgeous outside, nice and cool, overnight lows in the 70s instead of the high 80s or 90s. Daytime temps will drop to the low 90s by next weekend. Finally!

Hang on to the rose bush....keep it watered and cut the canes back this fall to about 12 inches, mulch it and see what happens in the spring. The roots may be growing stronger while the top is dormant.
I have some lovely crepe myrtles ranging in size from miniature to one that is 15 feet tall. Love them.
