What did you do in the garden today?

Hubby said yesterday morning that he was going to turn the water on in the garden when we got back from lunch and the grocery. God must have heard him because on the way home the rains predicted for NE of us moved in big time...blinding rain all the way home on our 18 mile drive.
No need to water the garden.
We got a 3" rain so my plans to keep cutting down wild sunflowers got put on hold!
We really needed the rain for our ponds and pastures.
It is still a gentle rain until noon today....so thankful.

We may have it here somewhere. Old cookbooks are a blast. Can usually find them at good will stores.

Do they have recipes for squirrel and rabbit?

I've got a Mrs Beatons or some ancient one around here somewhere. That's got all sorts of weird stuff in it, I think. Stuff like potted hare and stuff in aspic. Isn't it funny how things go out of fashion?

Question about compost.

I have a pile of mesquite limbs that have been drying out since last winter. There's some dirt, yard waste and kitchen scraps inside the pile and a top dressing of grass clippings that I've watered in a bit.

I'm planning to break up the limbs some more, all 1 inch diameter or less, and mix in the litter from my coop this week.

Should I water the pile when I do this? It's DRY at the top but I haven't been into the pile to know what it's like at the bottom. There's still lots of open space in there for stuff to fall between the tree limbs that I need to eliminate to get more active decomp.
How long should I compost before using in the garden?

Mesquite is a very hard wood tough to compost it. Makes very good writing pens though.

How long should I compost before using in the garden?

Until you can't identify the kitchen scraps/everything looks like dirt. OR whenever you feel like it. It really depends on where you want to put it. Anywhere near food crops, you need it to be proper compost. Under some manky shrub, you can let it rot on the ground.

And yes, you should keep watering it. I'm in a dry climate and I spend half my life watering my rubbish.

Have been picking enough kale and lettuce to top off our sandwiches the last few days. 2 big bowls of tomatoes to turn into salsa today. Made raspberry jam from frozen berries yesterday. Need to hoe the weed seeds in the green house, turn the soil, and plant some lettuce and cold weather greens.

West end flower bed completely ripped out, ready for compost, planting, cardboard, and wood chip mulch, then to put up a fence barrier to keep the chooks out of it. Hubby put up some corrugated fiberglass over the painted styrofoam (that the girls have been eating) covering the foundation on that end of the house. So, no more worries about the girls tearing the rest of that stuff down. I have 2 dwarf lilacs, will be replanting the rest of the area with clematis vines, oriental lilies, day lilies, a single russian sage, and some miscellaneous bulbs.
