What did you do in the garden today?

Hi everybody :frow

It's been a while since I've checked in. We're hatching quail and chickens so we've been busy prepping for those. Still need to build a coop!

I bought a few tomato plants last week and the guy mentioned it's time to plant, if we'd done it earlier we would've been scrambling to keep them from freezing. We seem to forget this winter was our normal, the last couple of years have been pretty warm. I sure hope this means the summer temps will be cooler though.

I have tomorrow off so I'll be replanting something in the quail garden and I need to stake the hibiscus. I'm going to feed everything and I need to cut all the dead stuff off the bougainvillea. I also have some peas to plamt and then protect from the quail.

On the plus side the Mexican heather is flowering and the oleanders made it through winter without much trouble. We've had decent amounts of rain so I haven't had to supplement much.

I hope the snow and cold temps leave everyone soon!

How cool does it get out in Arizona during the winter time??

It can freeze at night or we get frost in Phoenix. It depends on the winter. This winter has been more normal, ie we've had those cold temps but the last couple of years it's been warmer than usual.

Hi @Farmdog267 Have you tried using a trellis to grow a vertical type garden? Also hanging pots can produce an amazing array of veggies. That can make the most of your space.
My question today: The previous owner of this property left an amazing wealth of gear and gadgets. I had purchased tomato cages last year and discovered the movers had in fact grabbed the tomato cages from my old house. The previous owner left me an additional 6 cages. So with such an abundance, has any one used these with cucumbers and summer squash? I think it would work better with these plants if the large end on the ground. Has anyone done this before?

They worked for me quite well for cucumbers and peas but I haven't tried squash.

A few snaps from the yard today. We planted the tree in front of the coop a couple years after we moved in and only supplement water during the summer, it's doing great. It needs a trim this year.

The rain barrel had probably 30 gallons of water it, I was surprised! It's got the perfect flow to water the Mesquite tree without a lot running off down the slope and under the gate.

Thanks for the feedback. I was considering using these on the peas as well. I have heirloom sugar snap peas that are low growing semi bush. I thought they might do well with the cages. I'll be building tee pee type towers for the pole beans. Last year I tried netting and the runners got all twisted, even still I had a pretty decent harvest. Most people near me gave up on their green beans last year. I like my garden to be aesthetically pleasing as well as productive.

Your rain barrel is so pretty. Love the pictures.

I'll start by saying my current residence (1st purchased home) is a twin and we have about a 4500 sq ft lot. .11 acres so it is quite smaller than the .78 acre house I was previously renting. The previous garden was nearly 2000 square feet and this years will be 300 or so sq feet.
Yes, I have used trellis for certain plants that needed support to encourage growth. I'll normally plant those types of varieties closer to the exterior of the garden so they can also utilize the garden fence for support also.

To answer your question, Oh yea I've used tomato cages for cucumbers and other varieties! Squash or smaller varieties may be ok if you are harvesting them when they are smaller which most people try to do anyhow.
