What did you do in the garden today?

It's windy and chilly here today and my DP isn't feeling well so other than the watering and livestock care, this is an inside wash pet bedding day today. I started a batch of rice with Chinese sausage, and just about to bake some spicy chicken wings.

DH tilled more garden for me and I got squash, tomatoes and tomatillos transplanted and covered. Two tomatoes in planters. Got my chive plant moved from near the barn to a tire planter and put two or three, can't remember at the moment, little tomatillos in a planter. I may have to do a second transplant on those once they get bigger.

The only seeds I have left to plant are beans and corn but not until the first week in May for those.

the rest of my tomatoes and squash along with miniature sugar pumpkins will get planted by the chicken run. I had moved my run panels around leaving an open area all fertilized and ready to go. One of us will till it a bit and the extra plants will should thrive there.

AND my turnips are up. Guess they took my prayers.....and threats seriously.

There's 8 artichokes in there. I sprinkled with salt, garlic and onion pwd. There are 3 distinct plants out there, will definitely be dividing and hopefully get bigger blooms next year.

Does anybody put landscape fabric down and plant through it by cutting holes? I'm wondering if water will get through sufficiently before running off. I don't have drip irrigation, so it's just rain and the sprinkler/hose. Drip under the fabric or plastic would be great, but not happening this year. I would like to keep the weeds down though.

P.S.: Thanks everybody for the praise on the raised beds. I finished putting the last one together and started filling it. I have a pic of all six beds that I'll post in a bit from my phone.

@BReeder!, the raised bed was on my to do list this spring, exactly like yours. I have the corrugated metal on hand. Unfortunately the Covid 19 hit and DH and I are both high risk so trips to the lumber yard for pressure treated wood was out of the question.

Hopefully, next year.

As for the landscaping fabric, my limited experience with it is that it's okay once it is down it's okay, but getting it up can be a bit of a challenge. We found it under a failed strawberry patch when we bought our farm. DH had to pull it up with our tractor.

When we laid out the raised beds we put down a couple layers of cardboard in both the beds and the aisles. The aisles have a thick layer of wood chips and the beds are about 18" deep soil. Just did it this spring so we've yet to see how well this worked. I just found a roll of landscape fabric so since we're about out of cardboard, the fabric will start going down.

I'm thinking about putting fabric over our mounded rows. If I can just keep a 1ft strip weed free, it would make maintenance a lot easier on us.

What do you use for hummingbird food?

4 cups of boiling. Take water off of heat source. Add 1 cup white sugar. Stir to dissolve. Let cool. Fill feeders.
