What did you do in the garden today?

Good luck, @igorsMistress! Though...I think a Zoom interview might be a little less nerve-wracking than the regular kind. Especially since these days it feels like you have to do three or four interviews on the same day. Crazytown.

Glad you found your hen, @WthrLady...did you give her a citation for DUI? Probation? Must only forage with an older driver?

Wild roses can be really fabulous, @rocking chickens! I hope they bloom pink as well.

Thanks! At least I can still be barefoot and wear shorts. It's way too hot to get all gussied up.
Yup, mulched the living tar out of the vine maple and covered the top few inches with even more. I've been watering it a lot as well and It'll get a devoted drip waterer as well. And I didn't know you could get away with moving borage that much. Since it brings in so many pollinators, DP wanted me to try potting some and just moving them around the garden where pollinators are needed.
Best of luck on that interview! Remember to wear pants :).

Too hot out to mow now, it'll have to wait till tomorrow when I can start earlier. And it turns out the bunnies like watermelon as much as the chickens do, who knew? Did a shopping pick-up this morning but did I remember to order eggs? Of course not, so to make sausage rolls tonight I'll have to mask up and hit the local McKays. Just love seeing all the pictures everyone is posting, keep it up!
:gigNow you're taking away all the fun! Thank you lol.

My husband's ex-wife and her husband came over today. They brought mole traps with them!! :loveThey set up 11 traps for us and showed me how to manage them. I gave them homemade jams and jellies and a dozen eggs for payment.
When I checked the traps several hours later, one had already sprung and I had a dead mole.
Yeah! They have been tearing up my yard and garden.
My yellow squash had 1 squash on it but it shriveled up when it was still smaller than my pinkie.😞 Now it has another squash on it. Hopefully it will continue to grow.

Good morning gardeners. Another wet day and still more to come. The garden is responding very positively to all the rain. We've got about 2 inches or more of rain in the past 2 days. We are still in a bit of a drought, but catching up. The sump pump still hasn't come on so that tells me there's still a lot of dry earth below. (and yes, I'm checking for flooding in the basement) I managed to let the hens out for about a half hour yesterday before the rain got too heavy. The grass is slowly greening up. I picked a few peas this morning. The pole beans are climbing and I have a few tiny green beans forming on the bush beans. The cabbage is starting to form their coneheads. Finally. I managed to get a picture of the tiny yellow squash. I forgot to take the dill seeds with me when I did my walk around, so I'll do that later. Making more bread today. Yesterday Italian, today sourdough. It's nice to have the cooler temps for a while. My little bay laurel plant is growing very well finally. Best of luck with your job interview @igorsMistress. Have a great day everyone.

@igorsMistress - good luck! You WILL do great, pants or not. LOL

I feel your pain @penny1960 - I can't tell you how many times I replanted cukes. So frustrating! Good luck with this batch, hopefully the cages help.

@TropicalBabies beautiful pics, thank you. Your babies have such great coloring!

@NightingaleJen also thanks for the awesome pics! Jerky is in the dehydrator now - and it will NEVER happen again. Hamburger is not made for rolling out & cutting. If it is the most awesome jerky ever I will have to buy a jerky gun because that was such a pain! I rolled it out on a rolling mat with saran wrap over it. Then attempted to cut it into strip, that was a big fail so instead of strips I have, we'll call them, bites. I got 9 trays from 2 lbs, should be done pretty quick.

@NewBoots that's my plan too, retire, move somewhere peaceful and have lots of chickens, a big garden & maybe a couple goats. That will keep me busy & active. Congrats on living the dream!

LOL at the drunk hen. :gig

@Wee Farmer Sarah it's been either sprinkling or raining since I got up this am, it's so nice! The garden is happy, I'm sure.

I picked a yellow squash - yay first one for the year! I also replanted like 8 pole beans. The shade cloth is definitely a good idea for them but it was just a little too late for some. Hopefully I can get something out of the new ones, I should. I think this will be the last couple of days for lettuce, some has bolted. But the chickens love when I pull them out by the roots & throw them in the pen.

Have a wonderful day all!

I totally agree with all of that @Wee Farmer Sarah - I am definitely going to try some sort of hoop/mini high tunnel sort of thing next year to at least get a head start on some lettuce. I did order some real garden shade cloth, should be here Friday. As it is now I have to pull my surgical table cloth off when it rains. :gig. & I think I'll stick to the direct sow, it's worked quite well.

Today is hatch day for the chicks! However, have only seen a little rocking with only one egg. Maybe they are a bit delayed. There was a day that temp was a bit low, not very low, but maybe it will have delayed them a bit. Had several quitters this time, but I didn't turn quite as often (2-3x per day rather than the 3x every single day). But, still new at this, so it is a learning curve. Using this cheap incubator to learn. Maybe the hot weather keeps hens from eating enough, not enough nutrients :idunno However, we should get some pretty cute chicks!

Hot and steamy out there today and for the next several days!

I took a walk around the yard with the camera...got a LOT of pics, sorry!

Sold the ole 1930 Ford coup today (so not garden related!)

My clematis that has NEVER bloomed. I will move it in the fall so it gets some sun.
