What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. Thunderstorms rolled through last night. Lost power twice. I had trouble sleeping worrying about the basement flooding without the sump pump running. All is well except I'll have to rescedule my shopping trip for another day. I picked 2 zucchini and an okra pod this morning. I'm leaving the bush beans alone until tomorrow. I need to spray my bell peppers. Something is eating them. So sorry for your loss @karenerwin. My fig tree is loaded with green figs. I need to google them and see if I need to fertilize them now. Although they do look pretty good right now. More storms are forecasted to roll through here later this afternoon. Oh joy. I just need some sleep. My indeterminate cherry tomatoes are now about 6 feet tall. I sure hope I won't need a ladder to harvest them. LOL! Have a great day everyone.

The yellow squash grew together

One of the Super Sauce tomatoes is starting to get some color and they are huge , this one changing color is probably 4" high and 3" across , and there are others that are bigger . I am very pleased with these so far .

The green beans are growing like crazy

I did harvest all the potatoes the other day , ended up with approx . 70 lbs all together . Got a lot of good size bakers , and also peeling size and some salad size , very happy with the Kennebecs , I'll be growing them again next year .
Have a great day all .

Good morning gardeners. I went out to sit on the patio with the pups earlier. It smells like wet desert and it's lovely this morning. We might get some rain later, it'd be nice with thunder and lightning.

I watered the grass last night so there's nothing else to do outside. Have a great day!

Indeterminates also growing like mad. I am waiting for the copper to do its magic. I'd also like to spray the orchard, but must wait for the winds to drop. Going to plant some beans or such to fill in some gaps in autumn.

The bush tomatoes that are growing in the weed patch from seed, from chicken treats, are growing like gangbusters. They look better than the garden. There goes the theory that fresh rakings from the henhouse are too hot to grow anything or will kill things.

HA! Several of our barn swallow nests have fledged the past two days. I feel like we're infested with baby swallows. Watching them learn the dramatic aerial tactics was fun, the mother would snatch a downy feather from the hen house and then take it high up and let it float down. The babies would then take turns swooping and grabbing it and taking it somewhere else and letting it go, it was fun to watch them learn to catch it and bugs. Now they're really good flyers, and showing off all over the farm. Just going out to the barn is like running the gauntlet. They swoop at your head, just missing you, swoop at the hens, playing, dive bomb at the house and windows.

It's a riot! I can almost hear them yell "WHEEEEE!"

Morning everyone! Just a quick check in, we're headed out wheeling for the weekend.

Watered the garden as we seem to have a bubble over us, the rain is all around, but not on us! I sprayed a little more listerine on some of the squash that I missed - if anyone needs a quick fix for powdery mildew it works fantastic! I also sprayed the cukes again with the neem oil, sprayed a few squash too as the squash bugs seem to be moving onto them since they killed most of the cukes.

I did manage to pick to cukes & made 2 jars of refrigerator pickles. Got squash coming out my ears. Beans have tons of flowers! Oh & the rutabaga I planted a couple days ago are already coming up!

Alright ya'll, have a great weekend if I don't get back in here.

I'm so sorry, @karenerwin that must have been awful.

Mine too, I've heard of topping them to make them stop but I'll have to research it some.

That must have been so cool! We have some that must be close to fledging soon in a house near the coop, we're keeping our fingers crossed that the two outside cats don't get them.

I've never heard of this. I wonder if it works on rose mildew?

Slugs and snails got most of the radishes I planted in one of the felt bags, just a handful are usable. That's okay, I'll add them to my mixed pickle jars, those will be an interesting mix. Radishes, okra, and sugar snaps so far. Going to add more soil to the radish pot then stick in either a couple small peppers or a small stupice tomato that I still have in a 4" seedling pot. Got to get them all up potted one way or another. Good day for it, it rained a little bit last night and it's still overcast now. There's a pot of garbanzos soaking on the stove to make hummus out of later. I've got a lot of greek olives in the fridge (didn't see them so over bought) so maybe some tapanade to go with it. Have a great day everyone!

Here is my arch nemesis of the decade: squash vine borers. Just in case anyone doesnt know them yet and wonder why their squash wilt (see photo), rot, and die.... here are the grubs that eat the plants' hearts. And the eggs. And the frass pile at their entry hole. They generally go towards the tip of the plant from there. I would cry but i won't.

Your harvest looks wonderful, @Birdielee! Also, just in case you aren't sure...deer tastes delicious. Just saying.
Oh, man, I know it does! And they are well fed and beautiful around here. The only way they legally get killed in my neighborhood is when cars run into them. But if coronavirus gets the world so out of whack that food disappears, I'm sure the deer will get eaten right up.
