What did you do in the garden today?

Thank you for sharing your experience @jerryse . I don't know anybody personally who has had it but my brother lost a baseball buddy, a nurse friend and her father and my pasture neighbor lost her 46 yo nephew within 5 days of him contracting it at a bar on Oahu. I am thrilled that is not the case for all. I'm still staying out of the mix myself, my 88yo auntie who we are close to and help out would not survive.
I was thinking I would make the turkey and basics for TG and then make plates to bring to family and neighbors... but after seeing a few posts I think I may just do a big BBQ and skip the turkey- the chickens will be sad to not feast on the carcass... ok, small turkey. Then just do the stuffing, awesome greens, sweet potato and banana cream pie and/or pumpkin squares. Low kitchen heat. Sound so much more enjoyable than a big turkey bake. Thanks gang! You all have been rather helpful getting the hitch out of my giddy up!

My best friend is a respiratory therapist in a hospital on the COVID floor - she is having such a hard time dealing. She is mentally broken from watching patients die alone, watching people suffer & struggle to breath & fearing for her loved ones & herself (she has horrible asthma & is usually hospitalized multiple times a year for it). She had a co-worker show up for work, was sent home because she had a fever but felt fine, was then in ICU on a vent in a matter of hours & then she died that same day. She was 50 & had no underlying conditions. She motivates me to stay home, wash my hands & wear a mask! She is my hero, the world could use a million more of her.

It all makes me glad that I didn't go into healthcare, but instead chose IT. :gig

I know people personally who have had it - and people I know who died from it. One of my closest friends has it in their household right now and I'm very worried for the lot of them.

I'm doing thanksgiving in - just my three person household. Nobody else. Too many at-risk people that I love, including immune compromised family. One sister is dropping off a corn pie no-contact and that's it. I'm perfectly capable of cooking a mini thanksgiving on my own. We isolate now so that when we gather again nobody is missing.

Reports are saying people who get sick around thanksgiving will be in the morgue just in time for Christmas. We're not mucking about with any of it.

I wonder if the community garden put compost and mulch and then covered. Black plastic is used here to kill weeds and nematodes in summers. LOVE the cardboard and leafy material thoughts. That is def what I would do if it were me, I am so over plastics... :tongue
Cardboard might be the way to go. I am piling leaves on too, but want something to block weeds come early Spring. The plastic was interesting to me because I figured it would warm the soil early in Spring and choke the weeds from light. If durable, I could remove it before planting and then reuse it next year.

I would leave it off until spring then. You're right about plastic becoming brittle, torn and bits getting in the garden beds - especially in the cold. And if you live in a place where it has a chance to snow you really want that snow to hit your garden beds because snow is chock full of atmospheric nitrogen that you really want in your beds.

If you want it to smother weeds you should probably put it on in early spring like a cold frame or hoop house and let all the seeds sprout under the warm plastic and then rake the sprouted seeds into the soil to rip them up.

Good afternoon gardeners. It has been a busy few days but not much doing in the garden. I did get the dirt put in though, now I just need some cooler temps to come along and then I can plant more stuff. Record breaking heat for us again this week but at least it’s not triple digits!! Everything else is doing fine, including the oleanders. Finally!! The willow acacia is buzzing with bees and I can smell it when I go out the back door. The aloes are putting out pups like crazy so I need to pull those and both of the artichokes are doing great. No sprouts from the garlic, carrots or lettuce yet. I still have the two duck eggs in the incubator and decided not to hatch another set. If the sellers ducks start to lay again it’s getting too late in the season I think and so I’m going to email them to cancel my order for now. I need to get caught up , have a great afternoon all!
