Has anyone grown anything in a straw bale?

I have one that I used as a wind/snow block for the chickens for the winter. I don't need it & was thinking instead of it going to waste I could grow some squash in it away from the garden! Thoughts?

I’ve heard this works well in an aged bale. Make a hole, add some dirt, plant your item, keep it moist.

When I was kid Ma had potatoes in old bales had not even thought of it till it was brought up .. I do not buy any as it is to wet here bales of shaving do not mold straw will

Wouldn't work in my garden anyway. I use cattle panels for the whole row support. I'd still have to weed in and around the plants.

I picked up a Chicago Fig today. Pretty sure I can actually keep it in a pot for quite a long time. It only gets 10-12 ft tall according to the details on the packaging. With some pruning, I bet its possible to keep it around 6ft. Then I can bring it in the sun room in the winter. Even at 6ft plus the pot it should clear the doorway easily enough.
