What did you do in the garden today?

I can 90% of my tomatoes into plain sauce. From that I can do anything I want all year long. My best are SanMarzano. This year I am also planting Marriage SanMarzano to see how they do. Romas don't do well in this soil. And Amish paste are too large to complete ripening before I run out of season.

I also do early girl, better boy, and two varieties of cherry. Those are for DH to graze on.

Avon, and the formula changed years ago and doesn't do it anymore.

========finishing breakfast and then popping into town to get 9 more bags of mulch then home again to throw it down and spread it. Then I'll water the greenhouse, and mow the acreage. I know the birds are looking forward to getting out.

I'll also look for san marzano seeds for next sean but you have way more humidity than me.

I feel like crud. Doc had me go for a different test. Waiting on results. She thinks it's not Covid but wants to be certain.

I still will not stop getting things done though. There's too much work to do around here. I got a small retaining wall built and extended the gutter downspout to direct rain water properly away from the house and help keep water from pooling on the lower patio behind the sunroom. Got the rest of the dirt moved and graded best I can so I can finally get grass seed down. I also laid out a fire pit area that I'll be filling with gravel likely. I'm tempted to repurpose pavers I have, but it's so much work so forget that. Lastly I watered the garden and then made it in for some stuffed shells and salad that DW prepared for dinner.

We have more soil now, so I need to get working on up potting more starts. I also need to figure out where the heck I'm putting the sunflowers. I believe they are a giant variety, so the flower bed isn't exactly an ideal place. I'm thinking about forming a new bed around a tree stump out front and making it a bee, butterfly and hummingbird garden. Perhaps they could go there. I would need to get cracking on it though real soon...

Someone in another thread ended up with valley fever. She lives on the east coast and has been nowhere near the west. Nasty stuff.

Fire pit area with space for chairs. Still needs gravel or mulch.

The new retaining wall using blocks I had on end that match the wall in the background slightly to the left. Note the 20' run for the downspout. In retrospect, I should have buried a drain line and ran it to a pop up in the lawn. Maybe some other time.

Heading out to hang deer repellent strips in the orchard.
Winds will be howling today to 40 and temps in the 90s.

I'll check the onions to see if they need watering, I know they're due for feeding.
Everything in the greenhouse is due for a feeding, but I'll feed tomorrow when I water. I watered yesterday and forgot to mix in food.

I've got the SanMarz turning maroon on the stem and bottom of the leaves, which means they need potassium, so I've been slowly adding that back in. Don't know why it's just that variety. I can't find my seedling notes for this year. NUTS.

I also need to get a shade cloth up.

I'd LIKE to sneak into town today to the bookshop, but I'll have to go early as the University is playing its Spring game today. So 50,000 in the stands and all those that aren't, but are just out in the area. I feel like if I don't get a book to read, I'm going to BUST.

Tossing green bean seeds in to soak before planting. Just pre-soaking to speed germination, I'm not going to germinate inside and replant.

I had no idea pee was good for the compost! DH always just goes behind the shop, gonna tell him to use the compost.

Chilly out there this am. I guess we had a little snow overnight which is weird for May. I feel bad, I left the window open on the littles coop, they must have been a little chilly last night. Oops.

Heading out to put the starter in the compost & get it stirred. Will mulch the strawberry beds & maybe the peppers in the tunnel. I need to do some weeding too, but I don't have a ton to do out there. Couple more weeks till I can plant peppers & tomatoes. I'm going to try & make a flourless chocolate cake later too.

Everyones irises look so pretty! Mine still have a little ways to go, they are just popping up but no flower stalks yet.

The purpling can also happen because of cool weather. Some varieties are just a bit more cold sensitive.
