What did you do in the garden today?

Prob could have planted some other cold crops already peas kale and collards are all I have going so far. Got a package of thousand head kale from baker creek can't wait to see what that does. Thinking of planting it in the green house I never finished and then covering it this fall. Might have greens all winter for me and the birds. Usually do most the winter with blue curled vates kale unprotected. Think might do even better keeping the snow off it.

Just put planted painted mountain flour corn and glass gem pop corn.
Had to buy new tomatoes left the plants out Tue night forgot to bring them in had frost and killed them.
Isn’t this weather just the craziest? I brought chicks home Sunday in the snow, now it’s close to ninety.

I do actually. It’s frustrating. I can get rhubarb and mint started, but strawberries…
I have chicken wire over my strawberries. I put a crease in it lengthwise so it isn't actually on the plants. I did that when I saw hoof prints (deer) in the beds and lots of the leaves were just stems. So far, I think it has worked. Lots of little berries now! I plan to leave it there pretty much permanently. Unless/until we get a 6 foot fence...

The chicken wire also held the frost sheets up off the plants too.

I got one rabbit! There was another with it that got away. If it comes back, I'm going all out Elmer Fudd again. Sight is missing on my pellet gun so accuracy is an issue. I need to get a replacement sight.

I also purchased a fungicide at Menards called Daconil. Anybody have experience with it? It includes peach leaf curl in the instruction diagram as something it treats. Hoping it works. Should I remove the already curled leaves?
Look into rabbit guard fencing next time. The first several inches has much smaller holes.

I’m afraid there just isn’t really a good option here. The door is a bit of a hop but not far enough to keep out the snakes. And even then they just climb the chain link of the run. If I start doing more hatches i think I’ll break down and wrap the feed area with hardware cloth since that’s where the chicks stay.

So far I've only had the one rat snake enter my coop. It's skeleton has been hung on the back fence as a warning... Lol.

On a serious note, can you put down snake repellent in a way that it won't affect pets or chickens? There's many different types of repellent. We used to use moth balls at the barn where I used to board my horses until I moved.

I was thinking mothballs, but did you know it’s illegal to use mothballs to repel animals? Apparently a stray (predator!) cat can eat one, and die. You are allowed to use them if you keep them inside of a sock. So, that is my suggestion. Try putting it in a sock. A stocking is too thin and allow the dust out.

I went down to check the garden this morning. I'm a VERY unhappy camper... The heavy rain we received last night caused a flash flood right through the middle of my garden because of the storm drain that the city is dumping on my property. It washed away over half of my mulch. What didn't get washed away took out at least a third of my plants. I'm so furious.... I'm going down to the mayor's office tomorrow and raising hell. If they don't do something to fix the storm drain immediately, I'm getting an attorney. 😡🤬😡🤬
