What did you do in the garden today?

I try not to use chemicals anywhere. so far thank god I have a good health.
Octocrylene changes its chemical composition after a while as it breaks down. Its often found in the reef safe formulas. It turns into a fairly potent carcinogen as it breaks down. Personally, I’ve taken to just wearing light clothes, a hat, sunglasses and limiting my sun exposure. They do say mineral based formulas are “safe” 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm dreading the walk out to the garden. There's already a haze of moisture/humidity and pollen. I'm still stuffy from yesterday. But it does need eyes laid on it.

I cleaned the rest of the house carpet with the machine right as everyone went to bed last night so no one would be walking on it while it dried. So that's done.

But I need to check the start time on the irrigation system. It was starting slow this morning instead of 4am. It waters half the yard one day and half the next. No rain for the past week or the next so I'm trying to keep it from frying before it's time, but only because there is new seed down.

All the fabric for the quilt project is ironed.
All the fabric for the 1840s dresses is not.
The pattern for the dress maker's dummy is processing as we speak, but the fabric isn't here yet.
I'll work on that before the dresses, so I can drape on it.
But the quilt I can work on as soon as the new ruler I ordered gets here today.

So until all the bits and bobs arrive, I'll clean and organize the room, which is needed.

Hope you can all get a little dirt under your nails today.
How do you make a dress form?
Since they are under a year old, they should sell well. I took mine to a livestock auction that occurs once a month. They take a 25% cut, but I don’t have to meet up with random people that might not show up via a CL ad or similar
Where, or who, do you go to for the livestock auction? I wonder if theres one on my side?

Good afternoon gardeners. It’s toasty and sunny here. Possibly our first 110 degree day in our seven day forecast. Blah. Haven’t done anything outside yet today, but will be watering later and I need to fertilize the melons and cukes. We’ve had rain in the state but nothing in the valley. I’m going to have the grandkid help me measure the shade garden so I can order shade cloth and I bought some plant food stakes for shrubs yesterday to pound into the ground. I might need one more package, we shall see. I have new curtains coming for the spare room where the bunnies are living. They are thermal so they block heat but I’m changing color from lime green to silver grey. The lime green were purchased in desperation when we first moved here ten years ago and I’ve never replaced them. They’re so ugly and I can’t stand it any more! I also bought a new set for our bedroom in a light beige and I think I’ve finally decided ona color for our bedroom. I think I’m going to paint the hallway soon and get that done. This has been a project for a year but I had a lot of time when I started but then found a job, bam no more time to fill. I’m back to purging and have several boxes destined for the shade garden. I’m going to put a healthy layer of straw on top of those and hope to stop the weeds in there. Now I have to threaten the girl with throwing her stuff away if she doesn’t take it to storage and most things will be done inside.

It's icky out there. This weekend is looking to be great in the 70s though.

I fed the pepper plants today. If that doesn't make them happy I give up.

I also have only female flowers on my squash plants so far, but that always happens in the beginning. I would love to be picking squash soon! Speaking of has anyone tried the hormone sticky traps for cucumber beetles? I like the thought of not using chemicals, but with my luck I'll be catching bees & butterflies. :gig They make one for vine borers too. 🤔

My bush beans are flowering. :yesss: As are the tomatoes. None of my chives came up, wonder if the seeds were too old.

We got some very much needed rain today.
Losing a tomato plant to wilt or fungal disease. Sad about that. Others are doing well. So well that they are difficult to keep pruned.
Cucumbers are finally starting to take off. The winter squash and pumpkins are growing very well. So are some of the sunflowers - several succumbed to wind and heat but a handful still remain.
The herb need is looking great. The plants there are all filling out nicely. Only thing I wish for is now oregano - I porchased a single potted plant and split it in two, but I like to cook with it so much that I could use several plants.

I didn't get out much today. I was out there for only about 15 minutes. DS is sick with asthma symptoms brought on by allergies (at least that's the doctor's theory). DW and I got our second dose of the vaccine this morning and then took DS to the doctor. I worked the rest of the day and she picked up prescriptions and took care of the kids and chores. It's been a long day.

Hayfever. I did the same when I was a kid, even needed an inhaler for the worst of allergy season. I did outgrow out though.

Seeds arrived! Going to sit and think quite hard now for a few minutes about roughly how much of everything I want to get started. Will wait on corn until after dh gets here, so he can help prep the ground. Anybody got recommendations or preferences for how much they like to grow of tomatoes, okra, and peppers for a four person family?

My dad gave us a little scare today. Wound up in the ER with heart attack symptoms. Turned out to be throat spasms and an anxiety attack. He doesn't really have coping skills, so I'm honestly not surprised, especially given as much as he's got going on in his life right now. And the heat. No doubt it just made everything worse.

Glad to hear he’s okay :hugs

as for the auctions
all our livestock auctions are listed on craigslist, so check there
I didnt find anything on CL, but went down a rabbit hole and found some auction companies sorta close to me. Mt. Hope and Rogers seem to be the ones with any actual sales going on right now.
I really need to get into the farm scene here. You'd think Id be drowning in it 🤣
