What did you do in the garden today?

There is nothing like home made bone broth, but I agree with your DH, it doesn't smell great. I've thought about simmering it on the grill burner outside instead of in the house...

Dear Wife is from the Philippines. She can cook some really pungent native dishes, especially if they involve using patis, a fish sauce of the Philippines. I think you have to grow up with that stuff to appreciate it - if you know what I mean. Even after being married for 30+ years, there are a number of native dishes that I cannot stand to eat, or smell.

To make a long story short, I built a new deck out back off our kitchen and Dear Wife is happy to cook her more "native" dishes outside during our non-winter months. Happy wife, happy life, the new deck was worth every penny.

BTW, Dear Wife is an excellent cook and I just love almost everything she prepares for us. But she is also smart enough to know that some dishes are too "native" for my delicate American stomach. Anyone on this forum want to eat pig's guts cooked in blood? Smells as good as described.

Not much to be done in my garden lately. Beans, tomatoes, onions, and strawberries are all doing good. I think I'll plant some more beans where the spinach and lettuce didn't come up. I always have lots to can so what's a few more plants? I'm also going to give my mom the rest of my carrot seeds. She has such a green thumb, she can make anything grow. Must be the farmer in her. It's been storming here every day so I haven't needed to water. And I wanted to put Miracle Grow on things but that will have to wait until we dry out. Have a great day everyone!

I have pulled at least 30 little oak trees starting to grow from acorns buried in & around my garden! They have finally stopped rooting around in there, but they sure did make a mess earlier in the season, knocking over my onion starts & destroying my dill.
Here it's maple saplings. We have a few huge silver maples, a japanese maple and a red maple. The seeds fall EVERYWHERE in the Spring. Many take up residency in our garden and need to be pulled.

I'm going to head out to the garden now finally. Working form home and running an all day workshop via telepresence. I'm on lunch now so I get to grab some sunshine and fresh air.
Later today after work I need to finish pickling and canning my harvest of radishes. I'd like to plant more of them too. The current harvest will make about 4-5 1/2 pint jars I think. We use them as a relish/topping so I don't need a whole lot, but I could use a bit more still. So far they are cleaned, sliced and soaking in a brine. I'll be packing them into the jars with seasonings and pouring a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water over them and then popping the jars into the canner. First time using the pressure canner too. My MIL gifted it to us last Fall when we visited them.

Omg, it is oppressively hot outside. I made the mistake of walking down to the garden for 15 minutes. My clothes look like I went swimming... They are soaked with sweat. I had to change.

Got some good pictures though... At least the tomatoes, squash, and peppers are happy....

Here's my garlic. Some of the leaves are dead. I think it is ready.... Especially after all this rain. I don't want it to rot.

Kohlrabi is finally making progress

Sage is extremely wilted. I think the overwhelming amount of rain and heat are leading to root rot maybe. Same with the blueberries. They are in a raised bed but the soil is saturated. Not good! 😕

Runner beans made it to the pole.

Little Cherokee tomatoes. Really pleased with this plant.

Here's the carrot greens I mentioned before. Lots on top but apparently nothing underneath.

LOTS of peppers... I've got at least 4 or 5 different kinds. Hot and sweet.

Same here in northern Minnesota. Temps in the 90F's, humidity about the same. There is an 80% chance of much needed rain tomorrow. Then back to high temps in the forecast.

Like you, I go outside to work for about 30 minutes, then have to come inside to cool off and change tee-shirts. Currently have 4 tee shirts in rotation for working outside. At the end of the day, they get thrown into the dirty wash.

:thumbsup Loved your pics. I planted some Buttercup Squash into an old tire and put it out in the middle of my backyard. Filled it 1:1 with top soil and chicken run compost. Those plants are exploding compared to my other plantings.

:idunno Question - is there any concern about growing food in those old tires? Do chemicals from the old tire leech into the soil and then get taken up by the plants? Just wondering, not very concerned....

My Purple Majesty potatoes are flowering now. They had blooms, but now the flowers are opening. They are a light purple in contrast to the white flowers on the Kennebec and Yukon Gold. Waiting to see what the Mountain Rose potato flowers look like. They are a pink potato, so pink flowers??? We will see.

I also pruned some tomatoes while out there and twisted the strings on them more. It's amazing how fast they grow, especially the suckers. I just pruned thoroughly this weekend, and there were suckers up to a foot long today that I had to remove. Most were just a few inches, but I couldn't believe that several were as long as they were in just a few days. Also, some of the plants grew nearly a foot in height as I had wrapped them around the strings this weekend too and had to wrap again today.

we're well into the 90s and with the soupy humidity, we're currently feeling like 103.
I just finished securing more apple trees to posts. Picking ticks off me.
Watering down the alpacas and closing the sun door on the coop.

Currently cooling off inside watching barn swallow vs carpenter bee. Swallow won.
Storms with wind coming in the early morning.
