What did you do in the garden today?

Question - is there any concern about growing food in those old tires? Do chemicals from the old tire leech into the soil and then get taken up by the plants? Just wondering, not very concerned....

I have read here on BYC that tires are inert until they are burned.

Now I remember why I got knee pads. They're wonderful!

I weeded the melons and peppers (on my knees), and gave two bucketsful to the chickens. I weeded the potatoes with a hoe, as all the weeds are tiny, or easy to hand pull. My back liked standing up for that.

I'm going to go see how many ripe strawberries I can find.

Does anyone else battle asparagus beetles? I've found the best thing to do is try to capture/kill the beetles. If not that, get the eggs off the plants. If not that, squish the larvae! (Wearing gloves, because... ewwww!)

Do you have a particular brand you recommend for knee pads? I usually just squat when I work in the garden, but the baby belly is getting too big for that.

I just looked... no label on them or anything. I got them at TSC. They aren't "garden" knee pads, so maybe look in a hardware store?

They have a hard plastic shell, and a thick layer of foam. I have used them to kneel on cement, no problem.

Not able to kneel here or bend have tires stacked 2 high not allot of weeding needed that way .. May be able to plant black mustard seed today just 68 ooutside

I feel like I'm the only person here who doesn't plant corn. I won't do it, you can't peer pressure me into it like you did with the strawberries.

I so badly want to raise some corn, if only enough to give to the chickens as treats. Don't judge me!

Awesome pictures, your garden looks great, and those gooseberries look like mine.

To make a long story short, I built a new deck out back off our kitchen and Dear Wife is happy to cook her more "native" dishes outside during our non-winter months. Happy wife, happy life, the new deck was worth every penny.

LOTS of peppers... I've got at least 4 or 5 different kinds. Hot and sweet.

I am so jealous of your success with the peppers (and the rest of your garden looks great) but I couldn't deal with the heat and humidity.

It rained just short of an inch last night and I'm so happy! Only had to water in the greenhouse this morning. The littles have totally figured out their trap door system and even came up the ramp when I called them to their refilled feeder. Going to hang a feeder and waterer under the coop today.

I picked up and (much harder part) set up a new big tv yesterday and as a reward, DP made a big batch of deviled eggs from the eggs I'd set aside so she wouldn't have trouble peeling them.! So delicious!

So this morning, I had to go get a few things from the HW store and while I was there, a friend called and said her friend had called her about a hen and chicks that needed a home and if she couldn't find one they'd have to be killed. I can't judge that since I understand having to cull but my brain began racing. How could I make more room for a mama hen and chicks? I asked how many chicks and she said she didn't know but that they were supposed to be an unusual color. OMG I must have them and as we all know, a different color of chicken doesn't count due to chicken math. But really, we already are well over our chicken limit and I hadn't talked it over with DP yet and I'd have to manage quarantine and integration on top of the littles I was already working on which would mean another small run and coop (maybe if I could get one of those crummy boxed coops) and on and on. I got done shopping and decided to drive over and look at the little family and check out their condition and the living conditions and then talk to DP to see if she was okay with yet more birds. So I called the gal to find out where she lived and as soon as I said hen and chicks she started to laugh and I figured it out and laughed too. No chickens were to be harmed, she had the plants called hen and chicks. I was actually very relieved and maybe just a teeny bit disappointed.

Time to get back outside, stay dirty everyone and as always, Welcome to the new posters!

I have Red Russian Kale I am growing and it is doing great! Leaves are beautiful a d ate some for lunch! But it is very spindly. Like spaghetti noodle flimsy like.
Any ideas on what could be causing that OR if it is normal til it gets to be a bigger plant?

Hmm, I've grown that before, and it was sturdy from go, any chance of a picture of the kale?

It's kinda hard to tell in pic (except you can see how the purple stem intertwines and just lays there on several as opposed to one that is standing yall). They are just very flimsy til you get to the leafy portion.
We are going to transplant these over weekend once my husband gets raised garden setup...we are little behind.
