They DID go hungry a LOT, ate a LOT of the same thing over and over until it was time to plant peas and lettuce, if they could get it. Ate grasses and weeds when needed, packed up and went home, or starved to death.
I'm constantly amazed at the acreage that is needed to put in enough food to raise a family for REAL, no corner market, no amazon, you are the diary, the butcher, the greengrocer, all of it. PLUS the land for the animals that you need to do that work. JUST STAGGERING.
My great grandparents ran a fruit farm during the 20s and 30s. They generally did well when others did not because they had land and 8 children to work it but they were not rich by any standard old or new. I never knew them but my grandmother would never waste anything. I remember her getting upset that my toddler wouldn't eat bread crust... She thought it was a waste. I know they were very resourceful and bartered a lot but I still feel I'd probably been one of those people who died from starvation or dysentery on the Oregon trail....
