What did you do in the garden today?

They DID go hungry a LOT, ate a LOT of the same thing over and over until it was time to plant peas and lettuce, if they could get it. Ate grasses and weeds when needed, packed up and went home, or starved to death.

I'm constantly amazed at the acreage that is needed to put in enough food to raise a family for REAL, no corner market, no amazon, you are the diary, the butcher, the greengrocer, all of it. PLUS the land for the animals that you need to do that work. JUST STAGGERING.

My great grandparents ran a fruit farm during the 20s and 30s. They generally did well when others did not because they had land and 8 children to work it but they were not rich by any standard old or new. I never knew them but my grandmother would never waste anything. I remember her getting upset that my toddler wouldn't eat bread crust... She thought it was a waste. I know they were very resourceful and bartered a lot but I still feel I'd probably been one of those people who died from starvation or dysentery on the Oregon trail.... 😂

Lost one of my baby chicks this morning to a fox. The chicks can fit through the 2x4 welded wire fence. I've been hoping to run out of the clock and that they would grow too big to get through the fence in the next week. Even now, they have to try several times and struggle to push through it....but they can still get out.

Now I have to decide what (if anything) to do about it. I can either do nothing and hope I don't lose any more before they get too big to fit through.... Or I can move them into my Silkie pen temporarily until they grow big enough that they can't get through. *sigh*

Just bummed about this....

@TJAnonymous so sorry about your baby! 😞

It finally stopped raining for about 24 hours and I’ve seen the sun peek out for about 5 minutes today (although there’s a 40% thunderstorm chance this afternoon and evening.)

Shallot bed is definitely dead...too much rain, but the onions and kale planted with them are still ok for now.

Here’s what I grabbed this morning, wasn’t chancing getting out later if I end up with more puddles. Beans look amazing, chard was full (only picked about half), and one zucchini full sized & ready to go!

Morning all.

Still raining here. Ugh. Very humid too. That's not going to help the peppers or tomatoes. I see the beginning of some powdery mildew on the squash, I may spray some milk & see if I can stop it before I need to break out the big guns.

That's about all that's going to happen out there today, unfortunately. My blueberries & gooseberries are going to waste, maybe I can get to them this weekend & make some jam. I need to check on the strawberry runners & pull the garlic too.

I have noticed that the purple pole beans aren't growing nearly as well the blue lake beans. I'm wondering if I should plant some more blue lakes in the bed with the purples or I may not have enough beans to get through the winter. I think I'll do that today & hope I'm not too late.

I’m in the northeast also. My yellow & green pole beans have beans on them, but my purple are bigger yet no beans yet. Same with my yellow & green bush vs purple bush (only a handful of purple ready). The purple tend to start later & go longer for me...No matter what varieties. I planted another two rows of each next week. Soaked them first for 8 hours. The sprouted in only 2 days (prob because of the rain.) It’s worth a shot to plant more! Beans are one thing I know will get eaten by everyone in my house lol.

Same here, green beans are one of the only veggies I actually enjoy! I don't think I could have too many between eating, canning & freezing, I'll take all I can grow. What zone are you in? So I did throw some more seeds out there. This is my first year with both bush beans & purple. The purple bush beans seem to be slowing down quite a bit, not nearly as prolific as I thought but my only comparison is to the blue lake poles from last year & I think they are extremely good at producing a large bounty so my expectations may be too high.

I sprayed the milk. :fl

Fill material deliveries today. Just trying to get above the standing water zone every time it rains. Sheesh. That and prep patio/outdoor kitchen areas for pavers. The toddler was having a great time spreading material with his little shovel until it got too hot and I dragged him inside. Terrible twos... you can imagine how well the end of play time went over.
