What did you do in the garden today?

Today, nothing. Ocular migraine complete with psychedelic color zigzag earlier gave way to a regular motion activated migraine. Cause unknown. Thought I was going suddenly blind at first, which was scary as heck.

Also had to ask DH to torch a black widow that decided to build a web in my car door cranny. I'm getting realllllllly tired of these things.
 
@MrLeeHo , if that is a Cherokee Purple, then I think I have a different kind. Mine look like very large cherry tomatoes. Dang. That's 7 of my plants. Sigh.

Like I said, they were seeds from a friend and they could have been mislabeled. Oh well. I
might have to buy some tomatoes to can this year. Worse things have happened.

My Purple Cherokee are really large too... Easily over a lb apiece. I don't know if they also make a Purple Cherokee that is a cherry tomato size or not....

I picked a bunch of cherry tomatoes today, along with some banana peppers and jalapeño. I pickled last year's sweet banana peppers and no one ate them. DH said he preferred hot so I planted hot banana peppers this year. Now he says he doesn't really want them.... 🙄 No idea what to do with them now but I'm getting bushels of them. Same with the jalapeños and Anaheim peppers.
 
I had almost a dozen Purple Cherokee that have ripened so far... DH used them, along with a trio of Bradleys, to make salsa. He complained about the purple Cherokee and asked me not to buy them again. He said they were a pain to peel after being blanched.
I ate one fresh the other day and, while it wasn't bad, it wasn't the greatest tomato I've ever eaten.

So I'm not sure what I think about them yet. I also planted some yellow brandywine, along with Bradley, Celebrity, and Super Fantastic varieties. None are ripe yet except the Purple Cherokee and Bradley.



a few years ago I planted some purple tomatoes, 1 small variety and 1 medium (don't remember the names). I wasn't impressed at all. they were somewhat dry and with hard skin.
 
To far behind to catch up.

Too many tomatoes to eat. Not enough of the sauce varieties to can yet.
Plenty of jalapeños and banana peppers. I pretty much can pick those at free will.
A lot of cucumbers. I've now canned 7-8 gallons of pickles and a bit of relish.
I need to pull the rest of the onions. I'm regularly cooking with the onions we have hanging on the garden fence to cure. They are delicious, but made my eyes burn like tear gas earlier today.
I think one of the sunflowers is about to actually flower. It's roughly 9ft tall. The one next to it is roughly 8ft and not flowing yet. There's a few others growing too.
Corn is developing. I picked my first ear yesterday. It was slightly premature, but still tasty.
I really need to dig up potatoes. I dug up some the other day to easy with breakfast the next day. They were the Mountain Rose variety. They were beautiful and delicious.
Zucchini and yellow squash are growing well and producing despite rabbits stealing their flowers.
Our parsnips have quadrupled their foliage this past week. I'm hoping that's a good sign. I figure there's plenty of leaves to feed the roots now.
Kale is producing more than we can eat.
Carrots are not doing very well. Many got topped off by the same rabbits eating the squash flowers. Weeds are always a problem around carrots too for me. I've never done well with them.
The herbs are going insane. I have tons of dill seed and the cilantro is developing coriander for us.



when I was a kid there were no canning varieties of tomatoes. we canned any red ripe tomatoes, just get rid of seeds and as much liquid as you can.
