I think my NY, NJ and MA siblings are flooded. Too bad I don’t have anything to do with them anymore. We have a little rain, but it’s basically dry here. I have plenty of room.

5lb, 4.8 oz pumpkin fell from the vine. I was waiting and seeing how things would go with the dangling pumpkins. Now I’ll have to make a few slings for the others. This one will go onto the porch to ripen a little more, but should be fine for a few pies.

I have about 4 pages of posts to catch up on. Will probably do it tomorrow... Feeling really bummed out today. I lost another chicken and I'm feeling pretty responsible for it. I usually let them out in the mornings to free range. This morning I had a gut feeling that I should leave them in until we returned from church. After thinking it over for a few minutes, I went ahead and let them out because I knew it was going to be really hot today and they'd prefer to free range in the coolness of the morning. We left for church around 9:15 AM. When I got back around noon, I went out to the coop to clean it. Saw one of my girls hanging upside down in the netting I have over the coop. As soon as I touched her, I realized she was dead. She was only 6 months old. The first chick I ever hatched from my incubator. I have no idea what scared her enough to try to fly over the fence into the netting but she got tangled in the netting upside down. I assume she over-exhausted herself struggling in the 90+ degree heat. She couldn't have been hanging there more than a 2-3 hours at most.

Anyway, if I had listened to my gut, she'd still be alive. smh.... That's 3 chickens in the past few weeks - 1 by fox, 1 by old age, and now 1 by accident.

We picked all the ripe habaneros and other peppers to start fermenting and I will be picking the ripe butternut squash this weekend to cook fresh and possibly freeze some for thanksgiving pie. We will probably need to do tomatoes again.

You might not have to freeze butternut for Thanksgiving pie. It will probably last just fine on your counter until then. Butternut holds up very well.

Yea... not sure butternut casserole sounds good to me. I like it baked with butter in it. Would make a really nice pie I imagine.

I am soooo behind, will try to get caught up.

Harvested about 10 pounds or so of tomatoes so far. Actually have a few pounds of peppers, enough to keep them on the grow plan for next spring. Definitely going to try pickling cucumbers again next year.

Had enough tomatoes to make my first batch of salsa the other day and it came out it is soooo thick. In fact the juice I drained from the blanched and pealed tomatoes is almost like jelly. Very strange, I assume it's a natural pectin. I made cowboy and bread n butter pickles and they turned out great. Today I canned 4 more pints of bread n butter pickles and 5 more pints of cowboy candy, as well as 2 pints of the pickling liquid (awesome on meats or rice). I'll go to the farmer's market on Wednesday for more pickling cucumbers cuz I'd like to try making some dill pickles.

The tomatoes are full of crazy promise and according to my records from last year, I should still be harvesting tomatoes in October. We'll be processing a few rabbits this week but not many, most of the last litter were sold for pets so they won the lottery. I put Pepeta (amberlink) in chicken jail to break her broody fit, and will cull one of the sfh who just won't stop being broody. On the happier side, Malificent, (sapphire gem) one of the new girls laid her first egg today to much singing this morning.

Lol, no potato heads here, too fast! Little girl is 6lbs 4oz, 18in long. Slightly unique name so I'll pass on posting it though Spud, lol!
