What did you do in the garden today?

Duck is delicious and the bones are a great addition to any stock pot. Particularly one that has mostly turkey scraps and bones, duck adds great depth to the flavor. You can often find frozen ones in grocery stores once we get closer to Thanksgiving.

Penny figured out she could simply crash through the deer netting around the bird feeders. Not to bother the birds, just to roll around in the tall grass inside. So I replaced the light netting with coated 2" x 4" wire fencing and that put an end to that.

Here's the run extension:

And here is where one of our Sussex blew up overnight:

She dropped the same amounts two nights in a row, surprising any feathers are left.

My poop board is a mess of feathers right now. In happy they're molting now though because the weather isn't too bad just yet. They should be refeathered by the time winter weather hits.

The rest of mine will wait until it gets COLD and then go naked. I swear they do it on purpose.
Mine were the same! They couldn't see below freezing temps on the forecast, they'd just up and poof! There went all the feathers... First time I saw it I had to count them twice because I was sure somebody exploded or was snatched.

This is my first fall without RSL pullets, I'm not used to getting only 2 eggs a day! I should have started hoarding them earlier. :gig Now I know what it's like to have regular birds, not egg laying machines. My RSLs never really molted, they'd lose a couple feathers here & there, but the others...feathers everywhere & no eggs! It's been eye opening just how much the reds are bred for massive production & it's sad. Won't own them again.

I *want* to tear out the garden but I pulled an entire basket of veggies from it yesterday! It's 75, no cold in sight so I'll wait. I'm gonna turn around to snow one of these days. :wee:lau
