What did you do in the garden today?

I've been starting to plan next year's garden. I don't have enough space for every variety of seed I have (I got a bunch of packets of free seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. a few years back), so I will have to choose what I want to try out and try some others in 2023.

We have groundhogs, squirrels, 13-striped ground squirrels, deer, turkeys, and I'm sure other garden-eating creatures that I want to keep out, but I'm not sure how realistic keeping the diggers out is... any advice on fencing?

With snow and freezing temps in the next couple of days, I picked the green tomatoes, pulled up the plants, and started prepping that bed for next spring.

This is our intro-snow. It seems like every year, around Columbus Day, we get a wet, heavy snow that takes out a few tree limbs and makes things messy for a day or two. Then, it melts off and we get milder temps until around Halloween.

I don’t mind snow too much, as long as I’m not forced to drive in it. Retirement has its bennies.

Still unseasonably warm here. Heavy rain the last few days made it a great time to dig up weeds.

I took some picture of my Egyptian Walking Onion bed... I'll post them later. There are very few weeds in there, because the onions have totally taken over. I dug a clump, and I'll post pictures of what they look like after I get them cleaned.

That sounds about right for is, too, on accumulation. The ground is way too warm for anything to stick.

My impatience comes in spring, as outdoor planting isn’t safe until late May. We even had snow over Memorial Day, this year. I’m hoping to have my greenhouse done by March so I can get a jump on gardening next season.

Made an experimental batch of apple pie filling, 2 quarts worth. It's really tasty. The apple peeler is a disappointment, it either cuts into the apple too far or skips a lot of the skin. Fortunately, apples are pretty forgiving about storage, I've got about 50 pounds waiting to be processed into something. The tomato juice I drained off the crushed tomatoes is really good and I'll drain it off whenever I made crushed tomatoes in the future. Still need to pick a bunch of the green tomatoes but they should keep fine outside for now.

I’m not sure what kind of peeler you have, bit the one I use has a couple of screws that allow me to adjust centering of the core and how far into the fruit the peeling part sinks.

I did pie filling a couple of years ago. I mostly mixed it in with yogurt as I didn’t like how mushy they turned out. I think I used an incompatible apple variety. OTOH, the apples I dehydrated a few years before that were my absolute fave for so many things.

Afternoon all. Busy day, got a lot done.

Got the littles covered run inside a run inside the big run ( ) all done. A bit early but it was a new idea so I had no idea how it would work, it took me most of the day. But I must say, it went down a million times better than I thought it would. Despite DH locking me in the chicken run & taking off, it worked out pretty well. The neighbors heard me yelling, I was throwing rocks at the windows.
