What did you do in the garden today?

I'm still feeling pretty cruddy today but have to work regardless. At least I can work from home.... Thank goodness for small favors. Scrambled up some of the frozen eggs to give the chickens a hot breakfast on a cold morning. I'm sure they appreciated it but I'm equally sure my battered lungs did not....

On the sunny side of life, my seed starts are doing well. Only 1 lavender and 1 eggplant hasn't sprouted. Oh, and the tobasco peppers but I just planted them a few days ago so I didn't expect them to come up yet. Some of the sprouts are almost to the top of the pan cover already! I took the cover off this afternoon just to give them some direct sunlight. Hopefully the loss of humidity in the exchange won't hurt them...

Be careful they don't get leggy. Plenty of light and some air movement will help now. A gentle breeze from a fan or nearby air duct vent is enough. You shouldn't need the plastic cover any more either.

Another week has passed, so I checked the last few varieties. I am down from 88 varieties to 69 varieties. I have 4 that are being retested because I learned that 1 of them needs darkness to germinate (it even says it right on the pocket, but did I read the packet?), and the other 3 would probably be happier with some stratification. So, I've got a few weeks left before I know what my final variety count is.

I did sit down the other day and fully plan my garden. So, I just need to go through it and figure out what my shopping list is for the things that I really want, but failed the germination test. I should probably go through it and look at plant heights, too...

And I bought me a garden cart! It's waiting for me at the store, but it will have to wait a little longer.

Which seed required darkness? I've seen sunlight requirements, but never a darkness requirement.

I can't even hope to dig anything for another 6-8 weeks, so anyone who is actually moving dirt, please keep posting so I can garden vicariously through you!

I've nearly got our raised beds ready for cold weather planting and once they don't look so shameful I'll take some pics. I was ashamed to have waited so long to finish the fall/winter cleanup but as I think @WthrLady said, the roots of last years annual plants have completely dissolved and the bed is so much easier to clear out. The freaking runner grass is just a monster, but at least I can count on the chickens to thoroughly destroy the runners. I still need to pull the old frozen fish out of the freezer, thaw them (at least a little) and bury them in the beds.

No sew and done in about five minutes. I’ve purchased some neat tshirts at Goodwill to make some of these as well.

No sewing! Now you are talking my language! I've got several old tshirts that are too ratty to wear anymore so this is perfect.

The plan is DD will be spending the weekend here. Living in an apartment complex, there's no telling how long she would be snowbound. I'm making the rounds for groceries and gasoline today.

Sounds like a great arrangement for the both of you. Best if luck to all of you folks in the path of the storm.

But how many cartons of eggs are you storing? You get what you pay for, so if you go for the cheapest, you might be buying another one again soon. However, look into second hand appliance stores. You might get something reliable and affordable there.

I'm hoping for a standard sized fridge to store eggs and a few cold beverages for when we have guests. No ice-makers or freezer compartment needed. I can probably find a used one that would be good enough.

Update started 5 ft field fence outside the old fence..
Neighbor with dog walked out. She said it was theirs but they had euthanized the dog already. She had not known birds died.. We are taking a break as old folks we deserve it.

Would an overhead ceiling fan be sufficient? It's about 10-12 ft away from the plants but it is always running on low speed.

Got the grocery shopping accomplished. One was a pick up of an online order, the other, OMG, everyone was going nuts. I just don’t get why people get so crazy when a storm rolls in. We’ve had storms that have dumped 3 feet of snow in a 3 day nor’easter. This might dump 12 inches of snow at the most. And it will be really cold so it’s the light and fluffy stuff. You can move it with a leaf blower. Lol! On the up side, my seed order has shipped already. Yay!

My soda, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages go inside two other refrigerators.... I would use a dorm fridge but that wouldn't be big enough for the amount of eggs I store. In the prime laying season, I'm getting 3 dozen eggs/day. Right now I have 9 18-count and 8 dozen eggs ready for sale. That doesn't include the ones in my kitchen fridge which are for personal use.

We bought a brand-new Fridge only upright. It lasted 3 years! So, we had to buy an upright with a freezer on top again. I was so mad! I loved my fridge only. Everything is junk anymore, so I refuse to pay top dollar for junk that won't even last 5 years...
