What did you do in the garden today?

I just read that onions help repel pests that bother the cabbage family. So I'm going to try that to see if I can grow better kale. And in with the kale, I'll try broccolini, if I find the seeds.

I have 400 onion sets coming, so I can spread the love around.

chamomile helps repel pest. it confuses them by it's strong odor.

The girls and the rooster are enjoying their expanded area. I’m still not finished with the expansion yet but they are right there checking it all out!

I bet they’ll love all that space all the time Karen. Probably lots of bugs under the leaves for them too!

Morning all.

Warmed up nicely yesterday. I got the little coop cleaned out. Got my 2 new small raised beds for the herbs put together.


Now I just need the dirt pile to thaw so I can fill them. Of course it's supposed to snow on Fri. Tree guys coming on Thurs. Moved all the leaves out of the big compost bin so I can start a new pile. My little EE isn't feeling well, been moping around since yesterday. I'm hoping she's just coming into lay & is feeling weird? Is that a thing?

Nice metal beds!
How do they do with the sun heating them up...I've always wondered if it is hard on the plants?
Are they cheaper than doing wood beds?

I have lots of the metal beds, they work great here in CT, not sure how they'd do in a much hotter climate tho. I like them better than wood, wood rots here too quickly. The galvanized beds are holding up much better than the cedar ones.

currently 0F and feels like -22 with the wind.
Two days ago I worked outside in Tshirt and shorts.
Two more days of this and we'll be back in the 40s at least.
Painfully cold out.
Will dart to Habitat and HomeDepot this morning and get some hot food into the hens later.

Love the metal beds.... Here's a few pictures of mine. They work fine in warm climates. DH just makes end frame pieces and then attaches the metal. Saves on wood and holds up just fine. Then I put a bunch of leaves, straw, compost in the bottom before the soil mix.
