What did you do in the garden today?

I just washed two 5-gallon buckets of eggs... And I still have more to collect.

I really need to get rid of some eggs... I advertised colored eggs for Easter on Nextdoor. I'm also going to town tomorrow afternoon to see if I can get some 3-gal food grade buckets from any of the bakeries or grocery stores. If I can find a couple, I want to try water glassing some eggs for storage.

I have a good tutorial for that where they came back a year later and ate the eggs, if you need it ping me.

I got my starts from the grocery store planted up at long last. Now we'll see if they make it. Or if the outdoor kitty eats them. That cat was a little curious about the chives. Hmm. Chicky chores done, everything watered, I'm done for the night. Just waiting on DH to bring the pizza home! Yeah!

I'm tired, lol.

If we buy property out here in western Texas, I'll need to clear a goodly amount of mesquite to do ANYTHING at all. Big enough chunks I'll save for firewood, but if you've seen wild mesquite, you know it's mostly twiggy!

Gonna be cold here today, 30s. DH put together 2 3x3 raised bed frames for me yesterday so I put down cardboard, wood chips and compost yesterday. I will let it sit covered for a couple days and then add some soil. I was able to turn the whole raised bed that had plastic on it! Hopefully if the weather stays in the upper 40s to 50s next week and forward I will put in some radish, spinach, lettuce and onion starts and then cover.

@TJAnonymous I can't imagine having all those eggs! I thought the 5 dozen I have to use was a lot.

would goats help with mesquite trees?

excellent question, the I believe is very bitter and I believe the pods are poisonous to goats. there are some animals that eat mesquite and it's not good for others.

would a goat be smart enough to know which parts to eat and not eat? I dunno

The short answer is NO. When we had goats they broke into our shop and ate half a bag of quik crete concrete mix. And No they did not die or even get sick.
Having goats are like having 2 year olds that never grow up, ever! Constantly baby proofing everything, and having to keep everything out of their reach. Lol, I'm done with goats.

You all reminded me of the time one of my boys ( then 5 & 6 years old or so) found a mantis egg case while we were hiking. We had no idea what it was. But we brought it home and put it in a jar ( with no lid). We woke up one morning to find hundreds, if not more, teeny, tiny praying mantis climbing all over the walls in our apartment !
We tried to move all of them safely outside. That was about 30 years ago!

50s today but winds howling over 50

Quick hardware store trip today for things for the hoophouse main air exchange.
Think I'll toss a couple of potatoes in the garden for DH and DS as I can buy seed potatoes at the market by the pound.

Still on the lookout for some more arapaho blackberries

But we brought it home and put it in a jar ( with no lid). We woke up one morning to find hundreds, if not more, of teeny, tiny praying mantis climbing all over the walls in our apartment !

We did the same, but knew what it was and put a firefly top on the jar. They STILL crawled through! Felt like MILLIONS of tiny assassins walking around the kitchen, eyeballing us.

That sounds like my Cockatoo. The difference is, YOUR brats will die off in a decade or so, finally giving you some peace, mine will bury me, and probably be the cause of death too
