What did you do in the garden today?

Finally got our posts in and 6 foot fence up around the garden!

:wee

We went with 2x4 welded wire. The gate is not done yet but finally removed the makeshift materials blocking bunnies & dogs! Thinking I will need to add 2ft of chicken wire or plastic mesh at the bottom to ensure the bunnies can’t squeeze through. But I’ll wait and see before taking the time to put it all on.

Going out to put some more pole beans in the pea patch that got eaten by the rabbit. Was going to put the winter squash in but I think I’ll wait til the morning.
Bunnies get through a 2x4 fencing hole like grease through a goose. Just FYI.
Told DH I was going to burn gas and go an hour north to a hardware store for loom parts. Told him if he went along I'd stop at the A&W for lunch and let him prowl the GIANT new Harbor Freight up there. Just got back.
Loom is fixed and now I'm doing weather work for the rest of the night.
3.75 inch hail is falling to my northeast and southeast. No one needs that!
Upate 30 minutes south of me 4 inch hail
45 minutes south of me 5.25 inch hail

First corns of the season
You must live WAY south of me!

Good plan, adult Eastern Cottontails will squeeze through 2x4 fencing if they are determined/scared.

Here are some pix of my walking onions. Pretty cool 🥰. I havent eaten any yet though.

We worked on the garden fence today. We got 5 posts and 50 feet of fence in. This project is going to take at least two weekends, but it's going to look nice. And I think we can keep the deer out with it too. DH is documenting with pictures. I just have a "before" pic, and I'll take one at the end.

The garden is going to be bigger when this is done. I'll be able to extend the raised beds and have another row of potatoes next year. But the main thing will be to keep the wildlife outside. I think a deer has been munching on the potato plants. I hope the dang thing is getting a tummy ache from that!

I have a 3/4 acre Dyna Trap out in my back yard, but it also cleared the mosquitoes in my front yard. I guess the smell of the bait I put in is irresistible to them. Refill on the UV and bait are expensive, but worth it. However, I never change them unless I start to get bit.

thank you for this link. I like the idea of this unit not using propane like competitors. Is there any harm from feeding the dead bugs to my chickens (because of the scent attractant)?

I did some searching and found a 1 acre unit on Bed Bath and Beyond reasonably priced ($112) so I pulled the trigger on it. But frankly, I’d pay full price at this point. The mosquitos and black fly are so bad that being outside is not enjoyable. We can’t sit and have an evening drink, watch chicken antics, have a fire without suffering…even the dogs bark and whine to go inside.
So, again, thank you. I hope this is as good as the reviews say.

Had to put a sick hen down tonight. ☹️ I had noticed she was not doing well in the past month and her time was limited. She's one of the RIR I adopted from the previous homeowner so I don't know how old she is... Well, this evening I saw two young roosters jump on her. She was laying sideways on the ground like she was dust bathing except she wasn't. She squawked in pain from them jumping on her but she was so weak that she couldn't even get up to get away from them. Being young, dumb boys...they continued to try to jump on her to breed her. 🙄 I ran to her rescue and picked her up. Tried to get her to drink but she refused. I decided to just put her out of her misery. I don't think there's much that could have been done. I petted and soothed her for a little while before DH did the dirty deed. Poor thing.

Rain let up late this afternoon. Cleaned up the coop a bit. If I understood it right the chickens molt a bit at this point in their lives, as there are a lot of feathers in the coop. They seem relaxed most times I see and interact with them. All 8 were on the roosts this AM, kind of neat.

If I had to rebuild the coop, I would have windows that open/close from the outside. I feel like my wet feet are dragging moisture into the coop when I go to open/close the windows. I hope the bedding dries out soon. (It’s a little damp, not wet wet.). They’re 12 weeks now and seeming to get more and more hungry!

Beans and corn are in the way up, sunflowers survived our digging efforts to put edging in(12-14ft bigguns) as they’ve sprung out of the ground. Kale and chard are getting sown tomorrow AM. Looking forward to beets being sown in July as we missed our early sow date. I prepped the community garden beds for my absolutely haggard tobacco plants. I want to try and roll cigars at the end of the year. Those plants only take 2 months to mature, surprisingly. Lots of large herb plants down there but that bed needs weeding out. Lupines are out!

All the best.
