What did you do in the garden today?

My favorites are cucumber chips in the dehydrator (with a bit of lemon juice, s&p & a sometimes a kick of cayenne, or regular dill pickle flavors), cucumber salad with sour cream & cucumber bread. We do cucumbers & tomatoes in vinegar & dill a lot as a side for dinner too.
Ooooo.... That's an idea. I think I will make some cucumber chips with the next batch of cukes.

My go to is olive oil and salt and pepper. Sometimes a splash of lemon juice or rice wine vinegar.
That would be the opposite of DW's "recipe". A crapload of vinegar and a little bit of oil. I can't deal with it.

Today I took my morning and harvested
You must live a lot farther south than I do!

I do give them acv in their water but nothing beats a bit of grit.
Grit is for grinding up the food in their gizzards. If they get anything other than commercial feed (kitchen scraps or forage) they NEED grit. But if they forage outside they might find enough on their own, I've never bought grit because there is everything from sand size to rocks in the area between the barns. They spend most of their time there after the barn gets opened in the morning, especially while the sun is high.

The only oops that I noticed the whole night is on these pictures from the photo booth. It says 1999.
Time for new glasses Karen! What I see is stylized 7.2.22. I think a more clear font would have been a better choice.

July 2, 2022 my daughter got married!
Congratulations to her!

You think it'd be worth trying? We are in a drought and 90-100s.
DH will be irate if I have him dig new holes and they don't make it lol.
I think I would water and keep the bushes alive then transplant in the fall after they drop their leaves and go dormant.

we have to run the furnace for hot water too. At least for now, we may change things eventually.
Great in the winter when you need to run the furnace anyway, not as great in the summer. My prior house had that setup. You might want to look into a heat pump water heater for "off heating season" use.

3 hours this afternoon doing a full winter strip down of the 200 sq feet of chicken run clean out.
DD2, my sister-in-law and I spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning out the 10x12 stall coop and the barn alley. Couldn't bring the tractor any further in than just the bucket so everything had to be raked the 30' from the coop. Six 5' buckets were filled and dumped in the compost bins, another spread over the alpacas' poop/pee pile.

fresh dug potatoes and sausage for 4th of July dinner. We grilled out a few days ago when friends were in town for a visit (burgers, steak, chicken), so going with a different meal.

These are yellow "Carola" and purple "Blackberry" potatoes. Many are smaller, but neither variety produces extremely large ones

So, This is all of the yellow potatoes. I know that the yellow ones are indeterminate potatoes - so, one should plant deep and mound several times as they grow to theoretically get more potatoes. Also, spacing should allow for some larger potatoes. That is what I did last year, but we really never got particularly large potatoes nor a bigger haul per plant. So this year I basically planted many in my raised bed and never hilled them, instead, I just planted them fairly deep. We shall see what the white potatoes end up looking like - they should be a generally larger potato. but I did not hill or give them a whole lot of space. The white ones aren't ready yet, so it will be 1-2 weeks at least before they are removed.

Today was pull-all-of-the-remaining-onions day.

The converted garage is now a pantry.

The potato row is right next to the one with the onions, and the tops of the Adirondack Blues have all turned brown and died down, so while I was out there I dug a single spud up, just to reassure myself that they had produced something. It's a bit goofy looking, but is otherwise in good condition and a healthy size.

I'm not sure why they insist on referring to anthocyanin pigmented potatoes as "blue" when they're actually purple, but they're cool looking nonetheless.

Oh & green beans go in the fridge or they wilt - or I blanch & freeze. Tomatoes go on the counter, I hate refrigerated maters. Lettuce gets washed immediately, spun & goes in a ziplock with a paper towel in the fridge. Squash stays on the counter if using if quickly, if not it goes in the fridge or I shred it & freeze it for squash breads. Peppers go in the fridge if not used quickly. Herbs I cut as needed, but Sarah is right, in a cup with water & it'll last a few days, or even in the fridge in a cup of water.
But basil does not like the fridge. It likes it warm and wet. Don’t refrigerate tomatoes unless they are over ripe. Refrigerator stops the flavor from developing more.

Your basket had me confused for a quick minute. It was like a trippy, spinning background & I had to do a double take. :gig

Blech, I despise basil. 🤭 Almost as much as cilantro! I'm so picky. Mom still makes fun of me crawling up into my highchair saying 'don't like, don't like' before I even knew what we were having. :lau

7 tons of pellets all put away, half were touched, half done by tractor. Phew, that's a relief!

DH says we won't have any vampires in the shop any time soon. I love the smell of garlic! & onions for that matter.

We're having spaghetti squash & meatballs for dinner. :drool

I did some much needed weeding today, about 3 buckets full. Some for the chickens, some for the compost.

I caught enough Japanese Beetles for bug snack for the chickens too. It's officially JB hunting season. I'll be making my rounds now every day. Free protein for the girls!

One of my girls will get on my lap and eat spinach leaves out of my hand. I didn't take in spinach today, but she got on my lap anyway. YAY! Then she pooped on me. :lau I wonder if that was a comment on my not bringing the usual treat...
