What did you do in the garden today?

I set my squash starts outside to get them hardened off for planting. It's cool and cloudy today, so I'll probably go ahead and put them into the ground this afternoon. Butterbush and summer squashes. I'm going to plant a few right next to my big pile of composted wood chips and see how they do.

I think I'll carefully cut around the plastic pots with scissors a couple inches down from the tops and leave the rim in place to protect against cutworms.

I can only plant one or two long squash plants. They produce too many fruit and I get tired of eating them.

I love winter squash, especially during colder months. I could eat one or two a week. I do get tired of zucchini and yellow crooknecks, but I have a freezer and it's nice to have some when there's snow on the ground. And I'm guessing chickens will eat squash too.

Have to post an updated picture of my cherry tomato plants in my pallet wood raised bed. The plants are now up to 52 inches tall. I have never seen tomato plants grow that much in my gardens. In the past, I was happy to see a 3 foot tall tomato plant at the end of the summer.

I just hope I not growing all plant and no produce!

Ridiculously hot out there.
Tomatoes are fed, have switched to the high phosphate feed for the tomatoes now that they are setting flower and fruit.

I planted all 11 of my squash starts. I planted one each of winter and summer squash next to my composted wood chips, and the others in their proper garden spots.

I forked away the woodchips along one side to about 8 inches deep, then dug two holes down to the native earth. It was pretty hard and clay like, but there were worms in it. I mixed in some peat moss, potting soil and organic fertilizer, then set in the squash starts. They are on the south side of the pile so they'll get plenty of sun.

I amended the soil in the garden the same way. The seedling haven't been in the pots very long, but the roots were already spiraling around the bottom and starting to grow out of the drain holes.

It rained the entire time I was planting, so perfect weather, I guess.

That's a good looking planter, I would build a trellis and let them go wild. However, the fruit on the plants I take the suckers off grow bigger and in comparison, the fruit size on the plants I let grow wild are half the size, but there are more of them, so its a toss up.

It got to 93 today. Had to water everything I planted.
