What did you do in the garden today?

For me it's about speed because I tried doing a more standard tomato variety in kratky last year and while it handled the heat. I chopped too much and the roots were insane and it just drank 200Ls up without the fruit ever going red. I'll look for those varieties then, seems to be available down under.

Well, my brother and his ex had some isa browns there for at least 5 years? But he made the coop kinda like a dog kennel so you had to crawl in .... (are we allowed to say naughty words on this forum?) just to get the eggs. They planted a lime/lemon/olive trees down there that have never fruited/flowered until I sprinkled some seamungus, blood&bone and some slow release powerfeed flower and citrus fertilizer. I was going to get a sack of potash from the ag store but we will see.

Really want to get some seedlings out today. Plan on tackling the squash, zucchini and rock melon first and try to give the rock melon some room away from the others to do its thing. With the tomatoes, I'm not sure if I want to do 3 or 2 rows in the garden bed as this particular bed is very wide 1.5m. Maybe some sunflowers.

Really? Never flowered or fruited? I have some friends who lived on a former chicken farm. Their avocado tree was bigger than any other I’ve ever seen. The fruit was huge and it sounded like someone jumping around on the roof when it fell.

Nope! Never! I think it's because it was built up with yellow sand so despite the top layer being soiled, underneath it's just sand. I'm hoping to build it with fertilizer/gypsum/jungle mulch.

Today I finally planted out my seedlings. Most got planted. Some got held back for kratky/nft purposes. I also went out to purchase some more seeds. Can't help myself. I've always been keen to grow Celtus after seeing it on youtube. Also picked up a white version of borage that was a seedling, that got planted alongside the blue borage and I did 3 rows of 3 different sunflowers.

I really want to do the long scarlet radish since I love the fact it's a quick turn around. Part of me wonders if I can sneak them around the tomatoes. I also decided to plant the cannonball squash in each of the beds for some ground cover. Not sure how much it will provide since supposedly it only yields 8-10 fruit per plant. We'll see what happens.

I kinda finished late and was tired by the end of it but hopefully I'll get some better pics tomorrow of all the other beds. I'm going to be dipping into the tile supply down back to make level pads for the kratky drums I'll start setting up along the fence. The rats will be fine dining this summer, no more mulberries for them

Oh, I don't think I provided enough space for them, but all this talk about artichokes made me want to plant the packet I had. I sort of did them around the border behind the borage/sunflowers. Way I see it, sunflowers will come and go by the time they get up and going.

I almost wish I had more garden beds to plant into and part of me starts looking at the old chook run to do some inground planting.

Nice! That looks like a really secure setup. Can the chickens access the space underneath the coop building?

Absolutely they can. I have a long poking stick for the days I need to pry their butts out of the dust bath under there and they don't want to go in.

Anyone have a suggestion for low cost plant labels that won't fade out before the end of the summer?

For plant markers I'll only need for the season I use the oil based markers that WthrLady mentioned. I write with these on old vinyl blinds. I write on both sides of the blind. They work really well.

I also have grown trees from seed and root cuttings for shrubs. Some of these plant tags need to last a very long time. I use foil duct tape. Very sticky with a peel off backing available at home improvement store. I cut a section of the foil tape and wrap around the vinyl blind and write on it with an ink pen. The pen engraves the foil tape. I've had these last many years through sun, rain, snow.
The tape is about $16 dollars per roll. The roll will last a very long time.

Went out to the garden this morning. We haven't been getting rain lately so got to water, water, water. Checked plants for insects and killed a couple cabbage worms. I found a few aphids in my collards so washed them away with a soapy spray. I hate aphids! They are sneaky little critters!

Broccoli and cabbage are coming along. Butterbeans in the background still growing. See that tiny plant out in the row all by itself?? It's a volunteer zinnia. There are several here and there coming up. I left it and gave it some water too!

My brugmansia is blooming! They smell good.

The gardening is so much easier since the bad heat is gone. I think the plants like it better too.
