What did you do in the garden today?

I need dirt therapy 😭
I know what you mean... I walked through the garden tonight. Too wet and muddy to do anything. I did weed the mineral tub where one of my gooseberries seedlings was planted just because they weeds were thick.

I think I'm going to buy one of those battery operated 6" chainsaws. We have some invasive tree species that is nearly impossible to irradicate. I try to catch them when they are fingers-width thick but within a season they will easily grow 2"+ thick and sprout numerous suckers around them. It's hard to keep them in check with just loppers. You can do it, it's just time consuming. Having that mini-chainsaw could make the job faster and easier, I think.

Indoor dirt therapy! 😊

This Maranta was just a cutting last summer. It really liked living under the grow lights. I had to move it to a window to make room for seedlings. Hope it will stay happy. Like I need more houseplants.

Is it hard to grow? How much do you need to plant to make it "worthwhile" to harvest the grain? Are the leaves edible?
Not at all and is quite tolerant of the cold. I had 4 plants last fall, and I harvested 2-quart freezer bags from that. It's just me and my husband, so when I use some it's usually only a cup or so. The leaves are edible, kind of like spinach. All in all, it is very low maintenance to grow, but harvesting the grain does take a little time. You have to dry the plant, then pop out all the grain (I just gently crush sections in my hand, and they come right out) soak in water for roughly 15 minutes to get the outer skin off (I put them in a bowl of water, when they sink they are done) skim all the fines and skins off the top of the water, place on a cookie sheet and pop in the oven on warm until dry, then freeze. Sounds like a lot but after the drying the whole process took me maybe 2 hours.
