Not at all and is quite tolerant of the cold. I had 4 plants last fall, and I harvested 2-quart freezer bags from that. It's just me and my husband, so when I use some it's usually only a cup or so. The leaves are edible, kind of like spinach. All in all, it is very low maintenance to grow, but harvesting the grain does take a little time. You have to dry the plant, then pop out all the grain (I just gently crush sections in my hand, and they come right out) soak in water for roughly 15 minutes to get the outer skin off (I put them in a bowl of water, when they sink they are done) skim all the fines and skins off the top of the water, place on a cookie sheet and pop in the oven on warm until dry, then freeze. Sounds like a lot but after the drying the whole process took me maybe 2 hours.
