What did you do in the garden today?

I picked a few pounds of beans from the Provider bush and Rattlesnake vines, plus another half dozen little tomatoes. The kale seeds are finally starting to sprout so I thinned a few of them out.

I think I'll cook green beans tomorrow the way I grew up eating them, simmered for a couple hours with some onion, ham and potatoes. A one pot meal.

We got done rain today! This was a good thing!

Oh yeah, I also cut up my 2nd 20lb Desert King watermelon tonight. I only ate half of the last one and gave the rest to the chickens as a treat during triple digits. Even with this latest one, I only actually diced up half for the family to eat. The other half is wrapped up in the refrigerator.

And I've probably got at least 2 more in the garden that are close to harvest and at least 10 in various stages of growth besides those.

I wonder what freeze dried watermelon tastes like? 😂 I don't know what else to do with them...
And then there is me, with my little stunted watermelons. And I do mean little! They ripened, but hardly grew. 🙁

I lifted them up & saw the darn eggs underneath
I use a handheld mirror to help with eggs on underside of leaves. I squish the eggs. Luckily if you are watching the plants often, you’ll see the first/second instar stages of the squash bugs and they are easy to kill then, often they are huddled together. The adults are large and smelly.

I learned a few years ago that watermelons and pumpkins are nitrogen hogs... I dump a wheelbarrow load of compost every few feet about a month before planting...

I planted the Brussel sprout seeds. I was very disappointed with the very small quantity of seeds in the packet. I won’t buy Burpees seeds again. I scattered carrot seeds between the Brussel sprouts. I watered the strawberry plants and picked more chocolate cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes and black beans. The dried black beans are just under 2 pounds and there’s still more on the bushes. This is a small 3 by 5 foot bed so I’m happy with their production. I worked on the littles coop and got their nest boxes up off the ground. I put a feeding cup with oyster shell in it so it’s available when the need. My peaches are ripening and I hope to start picking in the next week or two. Fingers crossed.

I'm thinking of planting beets for greens for us and chickens. Might try planting another row of green beans for fall as the grasshoppers are eating my blossoms off of my spring planted beans! as they come on. I'll leave carrots in till freeze and next year will plant in fall. They're kind of bitter to me. Squashes are dying off, not sure they're worth the real estate. It's too easy to get them from friends :celebrate :yesss: esp the zucchini.
I confess the garden has not been a priority this summer with DH having knee surgery, cataract x 2 , me with carpal tunnel surgery x2 ,flip house and in the middle of that we adopted a rescue 8 month old puppy.! Was supposed to be a mini poodle. Well that's half correct! He's a 35 # sheepadoodle:eek:. No shedding big goofball and prances with a BIG FLUFFY TAIL. You can see his prance in top photo. ( I just realized how messy my counter is in photo sorry, :barnie oh well it's canning season. ).

His mamma put his one eye out while carrying him as a pup. So he's been there 3 months. Prolly cuz he's not a 1.5 year old miniature poodle like they advertised . DUH
