What did you do in the garden today?

Still in drought. Watering at this point does nothing. Sigh.
I did purchase a variety of onion and some garlic yesterday. That will go in the next freeze dryer load.
Otherwise the garden, expect for leaf raking is done for the year and I'll do that after the first frost in a couple of weeks.
There is still one tree of apples to go, but they're an early October variety.

Went out to weed around the squash and pumpkin area. I did more weeding in the greenhouse area. I have a question for anyone that knows. I have sweet potatoes and I noticed that one is trying to come up out of the ground and I was wondering when should I dig them out. I don't eat sweet potatoes and this is my first year growing them so I am hoping someone can help me with it. Thank you in advance

Not sure what you mean.
We’ve noticed some of the potatoes here popping up too. But we leave ours in the ground until it gets cold- our season is possibly shorter than yours. We planted in June, so they’ve only been in 3 months. How long have yours been in the ground?

Don’t wash them when you dig them up - ok to brush off loose soil. let them cure for 7-10 days in a humid warm/hot environment. We tent two portable greenhouses with a heater and large bowl of water for the humidity. During curing they will heal nicks in the skin and develop more flavor/sweetness. Then store as you want.

Thank you for the advice. I have an extremely long growing season. I planted them in April or maybe sooner than that. All of the vines are extremely dark green so since I haven't ever grown sweet potatoes I was wondering what to do next. I also found out that the leaves of the sweet potato vines are edible. Just something new for me to try.

It's been a marathon here. I've been running single threaded since Wednesday and it's starting to catch up to me. Sunday I mowed the lawn, and the clover. I pulled out more tomato plants. Yesterday I fertilized the kale trees and the squash.

Today I pressure canned 14 pints of chicken stock, watered the garden a little, and transplanted some of the broccoli into larger pots. I'm looking forward to my spouse getting over covid. It zapped him good.
