What did you do in the garden today?

FINALLY the new rooves are on the chicken house and the run.
I still need to cover a broken window, and hang the electrics.

The plan next spring is to remove the ply and steel roof from the run extension, which is not full height, remove the wall that are falling apart (poor quality covid era wood) and raise the roof height and replace the walls and windows.

THe last of the grapes are almost ready for picking and juicing. The hummingbirds are still coming through. I found a dwarf apple tree at the store and am planting that in the good soil of the garden.

My first ever ripe bell 🥳

It's hot here. I watered some and picked a lot! Still have cucumbers growing from spring and producing really well. Enough I've shared them with my mom to make pickles, I made pickles and we both made relish. The plants are still healthy. The thing I think is working for them is their roots are in full shade , but the rest is in full sun. I have them planted on a East/West running 6 foot fence. The foot of the fence stays shade all day.
I still have pickle jars from last year. I need to eat more sandwiches.......:wee

If you crack open the seeds from a persimmon tree the inside part of the seed has three options. A spoon= deep snow that winter. A knife= the wind will cut like a knife
A fork = a light winter. Just an old wives tale and is only for the region it grows in .

I rely on wooly bear caterpillar stripes for my winter weather forecast.

The hormones in my 3 young roosters have peaked and they are now tag teaming all the mean hens 3 on one. I will lock the hens in tonight without the roosters to keep them from dying. I will keep the molting hens locked up until they start laying again and then I will let my white and brown colored Isa Brown rooster fertilize the eggs. Hopefully I can get some egg laying chicks from these old Breese/Cornish x hens.
