What did you do with your flock today?

Today was interesting in many ways.

I dug the remaining holes for the 12 fruit trees we got. I still have the holes for the various berry bushes, but I felt a sense of accomplishment getting this much done. I'm exhausted though.

Then DH and I went to check out peacocks and decided to build an enclosure and get chicks this summer or next. Apparently, peafowl hate snakes and will not tolerate them in their territory. I'm all for that attitude!

We played our favorite board game for a few hours. While playing, a poor juvenile woodpecker smacked into one of the sunroom windows and knocked himself silly. The guineas kept eyeing him, so I went out to check on him so the guineas wouldn't attack him. He was pretty stunned, but alive, so I was able to gently pick him up and quickly place him in the crook of a tree. Half an hour later, he had flown away. But I got to hold a wild woodpecker and be part of helping him recover. That was just an awesome feeling.

Then this evening, without any notice we suddenly got a tornado warning. The tornado was over us within half an hour. We do not currently have a tornado shelter, but we do have a closet under the stairs. We call it the "Harry Potter closet". It went right over our house, but by the grace of God we and our animals were spared. While we crouched with our dogs inside the small closet, we decided that reprioritizing was in order. A storm shelter will now be our next major expense.

Got a few friends for my lonely serama chick... now I have 6. All ladies, Cricket, Raven, Jacqueline, Mocha, Lottie, and Ashley.

Oh my gosh what a day! First of all. 12 holes for fruit trees is wonderful, hard and I bet you are tired. Hope your ground was soft ♡
Peafowl, what how glamorous is that! And DH on board. Your hitting the the lotto! Love they don't like snakes and a cool bit of trivia.

Ok. Now for the tornado. Oh. My. Goodness! That is intense. I am so happy you and your happy home are fine and hopefully untouched. That is just wild and scary. Well, welcome to Arkansas?!! 😬😬😬😬

Wow! Big day of reminders that we are only a small part of big things, but still a part of it all. Digging all those holes sounds exhausting but good hard work that leaves you feeling accomplished!

That’s so cool you were able to help the poor little birdie! ❤️❤️

I’m sooo glad to hear you all were spared the tornadoes wrath! How super scary!! Thank goodness for your Harry Potter closet!

Well we are still waiting on one that just pipped, and I think the other one left to hatch has died :-( I candled and couldn’t see any movement anymore. If the little pip hatches, I will have six little Tolbunt chickies! And next up are the d’Uccles! I’m already in love with them, such adorable little floofs!

Lets just say that quite a bit of pick ax swinging was involved. I had marked the spots on Saturday by starting a very small hole. It rained a bit in the night and that had helped to soften things up a little. But this is called Stone County for a reason.

This is actually DHs idea. Guineas will kill snakes too and are a lot cheaper. But this will bring DH some joy, and don't we all need something that just makes us smile?

We both grew up in tornado prone states. Neither of us had ever experienced something like this. It all just happened so fast. Then for several hours afterwards, there were severe thunderstorms. I mean just awful sounding thunder and lightning that just seemed like it was right outside your front door. So, yeah, storm shelter will be next in line. We'll get one big enough that it can also be a root cellar. My grandparents did that too. Being able to use it regularly for something besides hiding from a maybe once in a lifetime storm...well...that makes the cost a little less painful LOL.

But the little woodpecker...being able to hold him for a few seconds and help him find a safe place to gather his wits...that alone would've been a fine last day.

Yep....it'll be 3 years or so before we can reap the benefits, but it'll be really nice having fruit here on our little slice of heaven. We got peach, pear, apple, and plum. Plus muscadines and raspberries....and 3 big blueberry bushes to add to the dozen teeny plants I'd put in last year. Our veggies and herbs are getting started in trays in the sunroom. So i have a lot more digging in my immediate future, but it'll all be worth it. 😁

One of my best experiences ever. He was so much littler than they seem when you see them on a tree.

Amen all around! My friend's trampoline got mangled, but otherwise they were spared. It's still early, but I'll see later what kind of damage happened in the tornado's path.

Omigosh, they're so sweet! I love the group photo...looks like the one is leading a meeting."Order! Order! Ok, next up on the agenda is food. Joe, ya gotta stop pooping in our food supply!"

These Tolbunts look pretty incredible as chicks. Too fun! Sounds like you had a great hatch! Hope #6 made it out w/o any problems. I am looking forward to your photos as they grow. Congratulations miss @kurby job well done ♡
Yes, next up! l♡l
