What did you do with your flock today?

So today, dh is coming up and I am going to head down to set up and move Pi'i and her little brood to a rooster pen, clean broody box for Faith and put her in so her hatch will be safe.
That, dinner planning for my sweetie, laundry, pick up lawnmower and a few other chores. Not looking forward to the sweatbox.

@ChicksnMore how'd the family visit go?
@FBMcrazy8 how is your daughter liking being a cheerleader again?
Sorry about the cost of the wire. It will last a long time and you will be happy in the end but yeah, buying that stuff is sobering. $500 dollar eggs for sure.
Sounds like you have a busy day!
Yes she is loving it! Sometimes stubborn but I think that is due to her thyroid might not be acting right. Her medication could be off some. And yes the price of fencing is terrible but worth it. Especially when keeping the birds safe.

I don't do fb either and yes, I don't reach as many good people as I would like. Eventually word of mouth gets out from the few good I gleaned from cl. I also don't post my ph number on add but take a photo of my number and post it that way. It has rid me of the "send me this code back" scams. Plus those ones are super quick to respond, like fast minutes. I still really like cl but do notice it ebbs and flows. That is what roo pens are for ♡♡♡ it buys me a little patience.
Yeah I don’t have a lot of room for a rooster pen…but might have to find the room! 🤪

Wait I must have missed a page or two during surgery last week - she made the team!!! Thats awesome! I'm do happy for her!

I just have my original lil coop with the 8 sqft run I built on to it for my original 4.
This makes an awesome bachelor pad!!!
And Joey Bootyhead would definitely know as he is back in it again!
And if Bluey don't straighten up he's going in there too! He's getting to where he is asserting himself whenever Joey is in the bachelor pad...with his raging hormones!
I know they are animals...don't get me wrong but I so hate the whole mating thing for them!!!
It really just isnt for me...or I hadn't found the right roo yet one!
I know this is why Lizzy is sleeping single on top of the brooder...she's done this 3 nights in the past week.
Everyone else is piled on the coop front porch except Lizzy!

Yeah that sounds perfect for little dudes! I bought myself a mini circular saw so I might try my hand at a simple coop and run for the boys this winter! When it’s NOT 115 outside.

I agree the mating is definitely tough to get used to…but when the ladies are ready to accept the boys it mellows out considerably. The boys figure out how to do things better too…but all the raging early hormones are definitely tough to deal with! Little Lunch keeps trying to mount Fuzzbert (his surrogate MOM) and today I watched her fight him and he ran away eventually haha. I hope one of them decides to behave for you at least!

Yeah...I've seen it mellow out and it isn't too bad. But I just hate this stage so much and I wonder if lil Lizzy does too and she's on strike by not sleeping with em all on their porch!

Yes she did!!!! She is a happy little girl! Except that today during practice they were doing stunts. Problem was, the girls she is stunting with (in her grade level) wasn’t there today. One had an appointment and honestly glad she did. She has been having some medical problems and happens to be my daughters best friend out of the cheerleaders. The other just didn’t go, she went to Dairy Queen instead I guess. Then the other, we have no idea. She may have just not been feeling well. So my little girl didn’t get to do much today. But she watched and practiced by doing on her own. And to be honest I don’t want her being a flyer due to her potential of having problems coming of it.

I hope your healing is going well!

I love this idea! I did use a tote for my brooder, but it was one of the larger ones that is like 4ft long or so. It worked for us. And when the 18 of them got too big, we moved them into a connected box brooder with plastic (the ones ppl use to cover windows with in winter ) on the bottom and wood chips in the top of that. But now that the coop is done up, I have different ideas. I may take this one from you. I know though that I can’t put mine up high like that. It would be great too though. I really like your set up though!
One of the things I like about the rubber tub is that the texture of it seems good for baby feet. When I started with peas I had a hard time with the humidity. I was using a homemade incubator and new to hatching, so I struggled that whole first year to get that figured out. During that year I got a few babies with curled toes that needed some assistance to get them straightened out. The rubber tub texture just seem to me to help as much as homemade bird boots.
It really is pretty adorable...he may be moving himself back into the keep him group...my big lavender Orpington rooster has started acting a bit skittish and makes me slightly nervous...so he may be the one to go instead. It's just so hard because they are always the prettiest chickens!! And he and Roxy are so bonded, but I don't want to give her up! Sighhh why can't it be simple? :p
Chicken math strikes again! Bonded pairs only count as one right? ;) :lau
Mark people in your phone. I do emojis 👍👎🐥🐓🚫
What a good idea! I only saved the numbers for two people...one that I think bought my birds to resell and one that I thought was so adorable that I ended up giving them some birds for free...lol.
I don't really know where the limit is to be honest! In the big chicken run, I have Fluff )weighs almost 8 lbs!) and Emilio (bantam) and Spider and Lunch (even smaller bantam) and MAYBE Josephine/Joe. There are 12 for sure hens in that run...so the biggest issue is overusing the hens once the Polish get old enough to mate. I do have 5 more pullets waiting to be integrated in that run though, so that will make it 5:17.

In the bantam run, I have the big Orpington boy, Ruby the buff bantam, Rolly my itty bitty EE, and Bruno the OD rooster. In that run it is 4:9 but I also have 4 baby bantams (would be nice if they were all girls but highly unlikely!) now that I can add to the group in the future.

And in the "far away so I can limit their chances of getting MG" coop, I have 5 tiny boys and only 3 tiny ladies...so I need more of them but hoping I can hatch more instead of buying more. I guess time will tell!

But yes, 11 of the 14 are cockerels so it sort of depends on how they all mature! Plus my husband doesn't enjoy all the crowing Haha, oh well! He can't say no to Aria either so we will keep the faith! :)
That sounds about like my coops these days!
I only let 1 boy with the flock at a time for the most part. Anytime I get 2 or three it is drama and not fair to the ladies.. or the main guy or my nerves. The stand by get nicely housed and get ready to go to their very own flocks that are hopefully bigger and better than mine. Like, mine is the bar but they are welcome to go higher and find Aria's of their own ♡. I always have a buy back policy and that may help keep them well.

@MROO I love that you love your roo pen the best and have great neighbors. That is darn terrific ♡ makes me wish for more chicken space again.
I used to do the same. 1 roo just seemed best. The last few years I've gone chicken nuts though. The year my kids got me my first yokos and oegbs...I spent sooo much time just sitting on the wall in the garden next to their baby pen and watching them. I just didn't want to get rid of any of any of them. Multiple roosters has been working out well though so far...well, as long as the separate flocks are let out one at a time. Nutters would definitely say multiple roos sucked.
Yeah...I've seen it mellow out and it isn't too bad. But I just hate this stage so much and I wonder if lil Lizzy does too and she's on strike by not sleeping with em all on their porch!
Poor Lizzy! Hopefully at least one boy will reach the point where he starts calling the ladies to him with treats and tidbits, and plopping himself into possible nesting spots and calling the ladies to come inspect it etc. A mature good rooster knows how to charm his ladies quite sweetly!

Family time was really good 🙂. It was just hubby and the kids since we don't have any relatives close. Too much food, lots of chatter and just the pleasure of really not doing much at all...lol.

Schultz is a little better today. He seems more active...he actually looked perky and had that normal cocky posture when he ran up to greet me. Well, faster then slow walk...lol. ❤️
So I tentatively think he'll be ok. Hes still not perching or jumping up on me...but he's standing pretty steady when I pick him up. He got some melon, plumb and bread scraps today and did a pretty good job of gobbling them up. Not his normal greed level but no competition for the treats either.
When he starts trying to perch for bed again🤞, I'll take him back out and reintegrate him with the young flock.

Yay Schultz! I’m hoping to see him make a full recovery! 🤞🏻✊🏻 He has gentle eyes that’s always a good sign in my book ❤️
