What did you do with your flock today?

Hi,
im not sure yet, I was going to hatch my own eggs, which will be backyard crosses, but we just got rid of my production red rooster, who turned out to be a killer. But the EE roo is so great. Probably the first hatch will be from some eggs from a friend until my eggs are clear. It’s sooooo EXITING. I ordered it from Ali Express, and a hygrometer as well

Well, congratulations! Nice bator :D Will these be for you and maybe pals and fun?Americana mix's are nice IMO. I have had a few and pretty much loved them though my boys were a little too high strung for my location.
Well, it's time to get your brooder set up!

One of my worst roos gave me some of my favorite chicks but you just never know... still not worth putting up with him. Now I have the best roo but I am not getting the chicks I had hoped for from him, well at least not yet. I'm not giving up on him, I just need more hens, pretty sure. The chick aspect of chickeniering is very enjoyable and rewarding.
Looking forward to your stories and photos.

Yesterday I got 11 eggs out of 12 layers! And the 12th is my broody- so awesomeness and probably the last full house I may get in awhile, well, maybe ever as 6 are 2.5 and 3 years old. So, I am impressed with them. I did add a little layer crumble to their triple duty because I finally found some fresh layer crumble on this island, so it is most likely that. Sometimes, sometimes-many times... most ALL times, our feed stores will trend towards powdery useless crap and good layer crumble seems a rarity. Lucky me my closest store has been on a good trend for well over 6 months but this is the first good layer crumble I have seen in years. So I am floating in eggs now, have inquired about and utubed processing chickens... and also chatted with my friend with industrial incubator... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Cut wild pasture grass last eve and threw it on the coop roofs to dry this morning. The morning is stunning, clear and beautiful but TV man says clouds soon.
Shuffled the boys last eve, all seems calmer.
Chopped Papaya and gave the chickens a treat, need to go scrub the waters soon. Oh, and I picked bugs out of my cold compost yesterday for the crew. Total treat, lots of bugs to be had. You know you love your chickens when you are willing to grab the big red American cockroaches out by hand for them. Thank goodness I only found a few cuz they still gross me out :sick I washed my hands.
No chirping from the box yet but boy is Dusty hunkered down. I don't know if I mentioned that she has some feral in her. She gets flat as a pancake. Those feral's are masters of disguise. You can literally drive or step or horse step within inches of them and they hold tight. Brilliant mothers but raise unfriendly children. So... I wait to pull most all from her asap. My calendar is guess marked for Wednesday but... horse shoes and hand grenades with my memory... :p

Well, DH took auntie to go refrigerator shopping after his doc appointment this morning so I have some alone time. I had better get my wiggle on while all is quiet, always much to do.

Have an awesome day all!

Will you be able to use them all?

Will you be able to use them all?
I have an add posted on craigslist and it usually just takes one to grab all I have. Just may be trickier finding that one as someone more centrally located has posted eggs for less $$. Good for them. I will make a quiche, give and freeze. I only have brief moments with egg over flow so I will bask in it lol, make it my screen saver... :gig
I am getting the urge to incubate a big hatch still... I just want to NOT bombard myself with boys so I have to get brave and practical and realize the smart thing to do is use them to their fullest. I don't know, maybe i am too much of a nurturer or softie... ?

Here I could sell eggs for a good price in Davis. There is a place south of us that would not buy them unless the price was less than the lowest grade of eggs in the store!

The better eggs are over five dollars a dozen here.

With four old hens, I do not have extra eggs anymore.

Will you be freshening your flock? Are you adhering to city ordinances?
You have been doing this for awhile... do you ever tire of it?

Hi
I was going to try and make a brooder out of an old dresser, I used an apple bin before, but it was a little too drafty. What do you use for a brooder

I use a large, Huge plastic tub from Walmart covered with two pieces of hardware cloth it is not very shallow.
Still us hardware cloth bought a btooder plate that will handle 20 birds recently. Now I don't need it with my silkie brooding for me :celebrate
