What do I have here??

If it doesn't have a little bump where the snood grows out then it probably isn't a turkey poult. Even at a day old the little guys have a tiny lump at the base of the beak.

My vote is on pheasant as well.

keets have a lighter tummy color, turkeys have a little bump above their nostril region, and it looks too big for quail.

This baby was picked up yesterday morning about 45 minutes from my house. There is no way to get it back there. The family who found it said it was wandering around alone for over an hour and started making its way to the busy street in front of the house when they finally grabbed it. They said it was shivering and cold.

It is not eating or drinking that I can tell. It was sleeping an awful lot also. I gave him a couple drops of poly-vi-sol at different times today and he is beginning to pep up. He is in a brooder with 18 other chicks. While the other chicks are sleeping, he goes over and pulls their leg and throws them. He is pecking on all the smaller chicks until they fall. I guess he is feeling a little better now. I'm just surprised at how mean he is being to each chick.

Thanks for your guesses. I was thinking maybe pheasant also, but turkey would be cool. I will keep him safe and warm for a while until I can determine for sure what he is.

It is a wild turkey poult. It should perk up and adjust to brooding with your chicks rather quickly. Someone just brought me one earlier this week and it is doing well in with my chickies. Good luck with your new baby.

The reason I don't say pheasant is because this is a one week old ringneck:

Look at the feet color, beak color, size. It looks a little different than your bird.

Ticks, thanks for the pics. I am starting to agree with some of the posters that my baby is a turkey baby. Your right about the color of the legs. My baby has darker brownish legs. Here is a pic from this morning. Does anyone have a pic of a turkey at about 1 or 2 weeks old? What age does this guy look like? I was guessing about 1 week but never had a turkey before.

I'd try finding you some gamebird starter feed. It will be higher in protein than your regular chick starter, will do the little guy good.

I actually feed all my birds game bird food. My young ones get game bird starter or grower, my older ones get game bird breeder. I will check out this chukar thing. Are they running wild in NJ? In a pretty populated area?
