What do people mean by "it's animal cruelty to dye a chicken"?

Buugette, your chicken is beautiful. You did a very nice job.

I hope no one thinks coloring pets is cruel. My Shih tzu looked adorable when he was green for St Pat's day. I think he'll be really cute come Halloween when he's done in orange.

I sometimes wish my poodle was white so I could color her as well. As it is, she'll just have to tolerate the weird haircuts I give her. This month, she's a tiny clydesdale - leg feathers and all. Her mane is a bit sparse yet. lol

My husband works at a livestock auction/sale barn...glue and chalk, paint are used every time to label and identify the animals. the dyed silkie is adorable...its safe, non-toxic and can't hurt them. Have you ever seen the TLC shows where they do all that stuff to the dogs, spray paint, etc to make them look like other animals? What's the difference?

It is the coolest thing ever though!

In some locations it is cruelty as defined by law.
In a setting where it is not prohibited by law it becomes a matter of personal belief. It's cruelty if you think it's cruelty: it's not if you think it isn't.

Frankly, as I said before, if it isn't harming the chicken, we should all mind our own business. Unfortunately, there will always be people thinking they have the right to tell you what to do and how to behave.

They are in fact if one moves or runs out of food in mid winter.... The birds become very dependent and stop foraging depending on you for their food.
