The local feed store is out of the usual vitamin-electrolyte supplement I give my birds. All they had was Durvet "high performance poultry pak" and I'm trying to figure out how much to add to the water. The instructions say:

"Automatic watering system: add teh following amounts to 2 gallons of stock solution when the proportioner is set to meter at the rate of 1 ounce per gallon. Reduced feed intake - one-4 oz. packet. Extreme conditions - two-4 oz. pakcets."

I don't have an automatic watering system. Should I be adding 1 ounce to each gallon of water?

Also, the packet says it is for growing birds. Can I give it to my adults?

Thanks!

You should be able to contact the company that makes the product. The V&M that i bought was equally confusing. If you can't contact the company i would use it very sparingly. My mix ended up being one teaspoon per gallon of water(if i remember correctly). Good Luck and i hope this helps.

NO, I computed this in my head..
one ounce of the packet to 64 gallons of water.. If I am correct, there are 128 ounces in a gallon?

you can double check my figures..

A vitamin D supplement I have came with the same kind of instructions. Instead of trying to figure out how much of the straight supplement to add (which would be very small and hard to measure), I made a solution according to the instructions and added the correct amount of that to each gallon of my chicken's water.

It sounds like you should be able to take 2 gallons of water, and add a packet of the stuff. This would be your "stock solution", and you would add 1 ounce of this to each gallon of your chicken's water.

If 2 gallons is too much, (I know it is for me) than just make 1 gallon with 1/2 packet, or 1/2 gallon with 1/4 packet. You get the idea, as long as the concentration is the same, you can always add 1 ounce of this solution to each gallon of your chicken's water.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about anything, I'm no expert on this.

Your measurement instructions are right on..

I would keep the solution mixed, small,, for the reason that some vitamins lose their potency if not used soon after mixing..

I used Dana's formula and came up with eventually one quarter tsp per gallon. Does that sound right?

Otherwise, I'll use Dana's suggestion and just make up the mixture and add one ounce of that.
