What do you do when this happens?

You can always keep the flashlight down or covered a little bit so it isn' actually on her or pointed to her, just to make sure... it will drive you nuts thinking if she is or isn't

I had to leave for work in the dark this morning, so I'll have to check on her when I get home. Somebody at work said I should have just thrown those eggs away. Are they not safe to eat now? If she abandons her nest?

I certainly would not eat eggs that had been under a broody for more than a day.
You could open them up and look, then decide....but you'll probably find developing embryos inside.
I would have at least gone out to see if she had settled back on the nest this morning, but I don't work anymore so.....easy for me to say.

No you can not eat them after she has been sitting on them. And if there is 20 there is no telling how long ago the first one was layed.
If she is a good bloody she will sit on them and if she doesnt its noose you didn't miss the eggs since you didnt even know they were there till a few days ago:)
You should candle the eggs if you are worried about the egg development in like 3-5 days as long as she has settled on the eggs I would wait to make sure she is comfortable on them before you disturb her.

Thanks! I guess that was a silly question. Still learning! I appreciate the help!
No silly questions here! Every question is important! I'm glad I can help. If you notice the eggs are cold to the touch she hasn' been laying... candle them and see what's going on inside and throw out any that smell or should noting... When I am uncertain I keep the eggs under her until I am. I beleve each egg deserves to hatch.

Actually, IMO, you can eat the eggs. They are safe as long as they don't stink. The only thing is, they may be pretty gross with an embryo beginning development inside. Balut eggs anyone?

That's kinda why I didn't go out to check this morning. She'll either sit or she won't. And if she didn't I'd just be bummed all day. This way, when I get home at 2, I'll be prepared either way. Early mornings are emotional for me anyway. Lol. I did take 7 out and put them in my mini incubator. Cuz I believe every egg should have a chance too. I love that!
