What do you do when this happens?

Actually, IMO, you can eat the eggs. They are safe as long as they don't stink. The only thing is, they may be pretty gross with an embryo beginning development inside. Balut eggs anyone?
Haha! I wondered about that. I don't think that's for me tho. Lol.
I did candle a few last night, but only saw a little golden shadow. No veins yet. But I was trying to be sneaky and quiet so I didn't go thru them all.

When mine do this:
I wait a little while after nightfall and I will move her and her eggs in a big dog crate (really any size as long as she has some room, I just have a large one I like to use) and put her in the coop or run if your coop isn't big enough. Put enough pine shavings in it so she can make her nest in it. Some hens don' like to be moves in the beginning of their bloody adventure so she may protest or not do it at all. I like to test by putting one egg in first then her and if she accepts the move, then put all the rest of the eggs under her. It may take a few times for her to know that your are trying to help. I had to do it two nights in a row twice each night until one of one would finally just sit on them in the box. My hens are now used to being moved they just accept the change lol

Hens imprint on the look and location of their nests. Moving her now will likely cause her to abandon the nest. It would be better if you could set a small pen down over the existing nest.

If the eggs have reached the internal temperature of +40 degrees f or less it won't matter because these eggs are no longer viable.

I have moved about a dzn hens and all did fine... there are some hens more cranky then others and take a little more work but all stayed on the nest and had happy babies. I would be afraid to leave them out during this time of year animals are hunting for food more now because it is colder and food is harder to fine in some places.... better safe then sorry.

That was my initial thought, to put some wire around everything. But that's where I failed the last time. Maybe if I had done it at night while she was sleeping.

She left the nest :/
But the bright side is, now she's contained (I hope ) she's with the rooster I need her to be with ( my blue australorp.) And I did pick out 7 eggs for my incubator. If she does stay in her coop and start laying again she'll be in the right place!

Good to know! I'm not really sure about that. We've had some cold night here lately. I'm just gonna hold on to the ones I have and candle next week. Thanks for the info!

This is really hard to read in that light blue color, I skipped past without reading it.
