If not stored properly or even straight from th grainery, grains can be contaminated. There's risks with everything. Even growing your own grains can be contaminated with ergot, blister beetles, wild bird droppings, field mice (yuck!) droppings.
For me, giving them a little chicken from time to time is an easy protein treat. They also LOVE mealworms.
This thread is definitely "food for thought", lol!! Im sure I can find another protein source other than chicken.
Does anyone give canned cat food or tuna to their birds?
What about garden greens? Do y'all give green scraps? Like in the wild, I try to give them a variety in their food. I feel like it keeps them somewhat happy and it also seems to help gentle them. All but one of my birds will eat from my hand and even picks around me when I sit in their pens. I sometimes think, from the way they interact with me, that I better be careful they may just jump into my lap!
I hope this post doesn't come across defensive. I am only throwing out info and am open to suggestions and constructive criticism in caring properly for my flock.
