What do you grow in your garden?

Hey AccidentalFarm....If I knew how to contact you for a mailing address, I would share some butterbean seed. You'll need a very sturdy bean support for these vines as they exceed 10 feet and produce heavily.

About your aphid problem, my grandmother used to toss out soapy dishwater on affected plants. Have you seen www.gardensalive.com? They have natural-based pesticides and fertilizers.

Yay, hencackle! I am not alone growing weeds!!

I'm actually roto-tilling my raised beds today and tomorrow I putting in the easy basics:
zucchini
yellow crookneck
corn
summer squash

Last year I did the same, but the draught did me in.
(Purple thumb strikes again!)
The only plant that survived grew in the chicken coop...a renegade zucchini that Millie enjoyed thoroughly...

What, no tomatoes, Mudhen?!! Last year, I got a Hillbilly tomato plant from a specialty greenhouse. It surpassed the Mr. Stripey in production and taste in my garden. In case someone doesn't know, Hillbilly is a wonderful heirloom from the hills of West Virginia.

I think we need a section on the index page devoted to gardening.

Just put a couple tablespoons of liquid ivory or Murphy's Oil soap in a garden sprayer, fill it the rest of the way with water, and spray that on 'em. Just don't put it on stuff with fuzzy leaves; I killed 3 bleeding hearts that way. Works great on other stuff though; kills ants too (or at least makes 'em move somewhere else!) Or if you don't have too many plants to spray, you can do it with a spray bottle, just only use a little bit of the soap.

Hencackle, I tried growing tomatoes once, it was a sad experience..

The bugs seem to take over the moment you look away!
Out of four tomatoe plants we got a total of 5 tomatoes that were worth eating. (They were yummy!)
If the bugs don't, then theres always the rabbits and the deer that come by at night and pick through the salad buffet they think was planted for them!!

I've been reading this thread all along to see if anyone has any bunny/deer defensive strategies....

Mudhen, I have chicken wire around my garden to keep out the rabbits, deer netting to keep out the chickens. Sounds weird, but it works for me. I don't have suggestions about deer...sorry.

I have chicken wire around my garden. I put up post and have bird netting over the top. I haven't had any rabbits yet. As for deer, the neighbors say we have them, but I haven't seen any.
