What do you like/dislike about Game Chickens

Sumatras are NOT Game chickens. The original imports were crossed with American Game strains with notable success, but the Sumatras today of the American Lines are not "game"..now you can come across the German Lines which i had and they are a bit gamey..you have to keep them individually penned. They look more like American Game.

Just cause it looks like a game chicken, don't mean it is....

Do you know what I HATE about gamefowl.....the bad rap they get from people who have a narrow minded view on them, usually taking their views from info sources that themselves have never even been around gamefowl. I dislike the persecution that is leveled onto those of us trying to maintain these breeds because these are "fighting chickens" to the ignorant and ill informed, leveling their judgement onto others in a holier than thou way that makes me sick. If these folks could loosen up their narrow minds and be lucky enough to be allowed to be caretakers of some of these birds, they would never have a yard or a flock without them.

Yes, they take a little extra care compared to most barnyard chickens, but they are well worth it. I have seen hens protect young by throwing themselves at predators. I witnessed a rooster "guard" an injured hen who had been attacked by a pair of hawks. There he stood right out in the open meeting their dives with aerial counterattacks of his own, prepared to die himself to protect one of his flock. Their strong, individual personalities, their range of colors, and the prehistoric look of some of our orientals makes looking into their eyes seem like a trip back in time, back into the wild.

There is so much to like about them, after spending the better part of my life around gamefowl, that time and space on this post is not nearly enough to type it all down. I encourage everyone to learn a little something about gamefowl. After all, in that bird of yours running around your little piece of earth, there resides a little gameness, sad that it has been bred so far out.....

Prairechicken, what bad rap?

That they don't lay well, that's true they don't.

That the roosters will fight and possibly kill the loser, that's true.

Always hated that I could have 1 rooster only. That's why at one time I went to OEG bantams from games, same look (altho smaller) but you could have several roosters.

It doesnt even bother me that they are used for sport.
That is how chickens were first employed, many thousands of years ago. It is the reason these birds have the "charisma" everyone so loves.

GO Gamecocks.

That's funny..my Bruners, kelso's and hatch lay every day like clockwork..these fowl are not "egglayers"..yet i've never had a problem with them spitting out eggs everyday.

lol, I was just thinking the same thing... my hens lay 5-7 eggs a week and their eggs make better tasting omlettes than my RIRs
