Do you know what I HATE about gamefowl.....the bad rap they get from people who have a narrow minded view on them, usually taking their views from info sources that themselves have never even been around gamefowl. I dislike the persecution that is leveled onto those of us trying to maintain these breeds because these are "fighting chickens" to the ignorant and ill informed, leveling their judgement onto others in a holier than thou way that makes me sick. If these folks could loosen up their narrow minds and be lucky enough to be allowed to be caretakers of some of these birds, they would never have a yard or a flock without them.
Yes, they take a little extra care compared to most barnyard chickens, but they are well worth it. I have seen hens protect young by throwing themselves at predators. I witnessed a rooster "guard" an injured hen who had been attacked by a pair of hawks. There he stood right out in the open meeting their dives with aerial counterattacks of his own, prepared to die himself to protect one of his flock. Their strong, individual personalities, their range of colors, and the prehistoric look of some of our orientals makes looking into their eyes seem like a trip back in time, back into the wild.
There is so much to like about them, after spending the better part of my life around gamefowl, that time and space on this post is not nearly enough to type it all down. I encourage everyone to learn a little something about gamefowl. After all, in that bird of yours running around your little piece of earth, there resides a little gameness, sad that it has been bred so far out.....
