What do you pay for high speed internet???????

I'm in rural Alabama and have tries all of the so called high speed alternatives that are available. I wouldn't reccommend Hughsnet- when they put the dish up they put a leak in my roof that they would not fix- and the stuff never worked right. At&t cell phone internet worked o.k. but certain times of the day you couldn't conect and if you got connected it was slow. Verizons cell based internet card have worked best for me and has been the fastest- be ware if you stream video allot or download allot you will go over there unlimited plan. All of them are better than dial-up. All run in the 59.99 range. I like at&t cell phone service best but I reccomend Verizons cell based internet

Comcast here for I believe $50.00 a month (not in a bundle)--wife and I got rid of our lan line years ago and we've been very happy with Direct TV .

But recently clear (a wifi service based on microwave tech) has come to Portland and our neighborhood is not covered yet, but if my neighborhood was covered it'd be $30.00 a month for the house network and we could get rid of one more wire running to the house (leaving only the power company). It'd be another $40 for a USB modem that would work on the laptop anywhere in the city that was covered by clear.

I gotta admit I'm glad I live in Portland, been on cable for 6-7 years here and had DSL 3-4 before that. I couldn't imagine being on dial-up now a days- I get frustrated if anything takes longer than 5 minutes to download anymore.

I had origanally called Hughs Net earlier last year when I got my computer. I had been shopping around like there were a lot of places to look. That was a joke. Anyway with a bundle of Centurytel/dish network/ Hughsnet its looking like my bill would be around $172.00 a month and I don't have movie channels or long distance on my phone bill. They wanted to much to install the dish so I declined. That is just way to high I think and the ad I have now said for Hughsnet that packages start at $ 59.99. The ad also says free installation $199.00 value. It wasn't $199.00 when I concidered using them.

I have verizon wireless but how does an air card work? Does it take minutes from your phone?

I have a couple of things I can trim down, just trying to decide the best way to go. If I could do it without my home phone that would be fine. We don't need it, we don't use it. Hmmmmmm

The air card is a seperate plan from your phone. You get 5 GB a month. You will not go over that unless you stream movies allot. Just surfing the net and email if you are on it constantly you may use 3GB. Its 59.99 mo and is worth it.

Well if I did something like what you are saying than I could turn off my land line and that would take care of half that cost or more plus dropping my provider I have now would put me at around $15.00 to $20.00 a month. What happens if you go past the 5GB?

Edited to say: compared to what I was already paying if I droped my provider now and my centurytel landline bill that would knock off $46.00 that could be used toward the wireless provider.

Overage charges - you can keep track of what you use online though- They update your usage daily for you.
